Last year's thread: Best photo of 2015. Since 2016 is winding down I think it's time to put up this thread, for you to post your BEST photo taken in 2016. I think it would be much better if people stick to a single photo, since as they say, less is more. If you really can't decide, post more, but try and stick to not more than three. You decide the criteria for why it's your best, technically or otherwise, but it's more fun if you let us know that reason.

Fire and iceAfter three years, I was able to make a return trip to the incomparable Karakoram Range, which features the finest mountain scenery on the planet. I've selected the above picture as my best one of 2016 because it features the most spectacular mountain I've ever seen: At 21,040ft Sosbun Brakk - which translates to "Wall-of-teeth Rock" in the local Balti language - may not be the tallest one in the region, but the balletic spires and conical shape make for an irresistible combination. Now a few words about the photo: This ice pool was located a few hundred yards from our campsite, at the edge of the Biafo Glacier. To get to this point (elevation ~16,000ft) we'd spent the past week walking atop the 42mi long glacier. The day before, I'd identified the lovely green pool as a nice shooting location. On this frigid morning, just before dawn, I scrambled my way down the unstable boulders to the pool, to find it wearing a light glaze of ice. Initially, due to overcast conditions, dawn was a no-show. And then, as the sun rose higher, a beam of light found a hole in the clouds and began to play on the craggy slopes of the magnificent Sosbun Brakk. It was as if the mountain was on fire. The show was over inside a few minutes, but this only made it all the more special.

I chose this one mainly because of it being my most viewed photo on flickr and also with the most faves. The sun was right as were the shadows. It was taken in downtown Flagstaff on Route 66. I had less than 5 seconds to take the photo because folks crossing the road were right behind me. It was captured with an iPhone 5s. Link to the picture on flickr

So far, this has been my favorite shot of 2016. We were snorkeling and finding sand dollars off the coast of Florida, and decided to sneak in one more swim before a a front moved in and churned things up for a few days.

I don't like the word 'best', I prefer 'favorite'. This was taken this summer on our vacation (in a RV). We were camped at an RV park in Santa Rosa New Mexico. We were eating dinner and saw some "interesting" storm clouds forming. I quickly grabbed my camera stuff and went out in hopes to capture "something". Got some lightning shots, then all hell broke out. Rain, wind and thunder/lightning. Made a mad dash to the RV, but I was disoriented. Luckily the campground host was driving around and I hitched a ride back to the RV. I was soaked, but I got a few cool shots. This is my favorite:

I have two "favorites", so different in style, I can't decide which I like more. First is my "widefield" shot of Cygnus. The weather/clouds have been atrocious this year, so I was pleased that when I had an unexpectedly clear night, I was able to grab my small tracker and shoot this "widefield" using my 85mm lens. Second is my Dragonfly in flight over a pond covered in fall leaves. After this summer's bats had disappeared, I found a new challenge, capturing dragonflies in flight. Bats are a piece of cake compared to these guys !!

If the rest of you can pick one favorite from all your travels, I should be able to as well. But I can't! My favorite memory this year was visiting an Elephant Rescue/Sanctuary in Thailand. This was my favorite picture from that day. I really liked this shot from Mexico City, too. It was right before Independence Day and everyone was stocking up on patriotism.

I don't like the word 'best', I prefer 'favorite'. Me too, but the word "best" is better marketing! Great opening photos, everyone! swimswithtrout , that dragonfly photo is special (I remember it well from when you first posted it).

Some fantastic photos here. I love SWT's micro & macro contrast, and T4's wide-angle snorkler. Gali's photos is as amazing as it was when first posted.
