I spent a bunch of time I shouldn't have trying to narrow my choices down. Not an easy thing to do. I didn't have a single really iconic photo this year, one that I can be super-proud of. But I did have several that almost did what I wanted them to, and of those, I chose: I'll share out the rest in the Random Photo thread

It was hard to choose, but this is probably my favorite from this year: From our Blue Ridge Parkway bicycle trip. This is from Mount Mitchell State Park in North Carolina, near the entrance:

Rather difficult to choose as had a lot of strong work this year. Instead of my large landscapes, will offer the below intimate wildflower landscape worked on my Pine Creek backpack in the John Muir Wilderness. Very sharp edge to edge top to bottom with a lot of small detail so at 5700x3900 pixels a sharp 30x20 inch print. 1 frame 10 image focus stack blend A6000 Sigma 60mm DN.

snippet from above link:
Showers did slowly wane and skies brightened a bit though the only blue above was far to the west. It was 7:50am when I finally completed securing my camp gear (from rain) and moved down the hill towards the lake. Just below camp was a turf hummock dammed set of pools with many wildflowers. One particular subject I'd checked Wednesday was a two stem bog shooting star, dodecatheon redolens, plant right in the water with a beautiful complement of other flowers in the turf beside including Lemmon's and Peirson's paintbrush. Diffuse light through the gray clouds was perfect for the shot and the air was dead calm. I set up my tripod to get the right stem shooting star behind a section of the dark pool while the plant's reflection was in the foreground water. Two dry brown stems from the previous summer floated atop the dark water while reflecting plants stood out sharply as darker silhouettes. Then took 10 shots at F11 making sure the focus stack stitch blend frames would result in a sharp image edge to edge. And indeed the result is the best intimate wildflower landscape I've ever taken.

A fantastic example of scale. Which reminds me of another one that I'd missed in my first go around. You want scale ? This is "Markarian's Chain", the heart of the Virgo Galaxy cluster.

Some very cool stuff folks. I didn't get out enough, but I got to some favorites including this day on Mt. Sublette in July. This cliff edge is on the Continental Divide. For me a moderate dayhike, easy for many of you. how to do a screen shot

I only got to the mountains once this year, and I was rewarded with this striking view of Mt. Marcy in the background: This is supposed to be the view (someone else's photo):

Susnet at a high mountain lake in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. I took a lot of photos this year that captured the main elements of each trip pretty well, but didn't get that many that had a lot of "WOW" factor to them. Maybe next year!

walkswithblackflies that is a nice photo, but I'm sad that you only got to the mountains once this year! May 2017 be kinder to you.

This is probably my favorite image from 2016, shot from Bighorn Canyon in Montana: Celestial River by Kevin Palmer, on Flickr It's actually a combination of 3 pictures totaling nearly an hour of exposure time utilizing a star-tracking mount. What makes this image my favorite is it was just a couple hours after one of the most stunning sunsets I've seen ( link). There was a lot to take in that evening.

Well, after Kevin's post we can just shut this thread down. It's over.

I'm pretty sure I posted this elsewhere, but it's my favorite from this past year. For me, personally, there's so much going on in this photo. Incredible trip with incredible people to get to see the Arctic.
