Another good/bad week. Although I had to work in the field Tu, W, and Th, I was able to work a way to ride my bike (dropped off truck at work in evening to use during the following days). A very hot week with heat indexes above 100F every day except Saturday (upper 80s).
After months of watching my diet, I cheated the previous weekend. Not horribly, mind you, I just consumed more calories than I expended. I immediately gained 3 lbs, and it did not come off... even with all the exercise M-W. I felt really run-down Th and F, and looked "fat". I was feeling down, but Saturday's hike/run was what the doctor ordered. Between Su and Tu (of this week), I lost 4 lbs... and saw 170s for the first time in a few years. I also regained my definition. I was back up to 180 this morning, but that was expected.
M: Bike commute 12 miles, "Spartan" workout like above during my son's soccer practice. Tu: Bike commute 15 miles. A lot of walking while at work. Evening walk 1.5 miles. W: Bike commute 28 miles. Some walking while at work. Evening walk 1.5 miles. Th: Could not bike commute this day. Some walking while at work. Heavy yard work in evening. Worn out. Look fat. F: Rest day. Worn out. Look fat. 4 mile bike ride with son. Sa: Run 1,000,000 errands in morning. Explore new trails in afternoon... hike/run 6 miles. Su: Begin digging foundation hole for new shed (approx 6 tons of soil).
On average, I burned 1,000 more calories per day than I ate each day except for Friday and today (each a 500 calorie deficit).
I think I sweat enough to fill a swimming pool. Looking forward to seasonable temperatures beginning tomorrow. I keep working out this week, then begin tailing off next week before the Spartan race.

Heat indexes above 100F M-W. Seasonable Th-F. Actually chilly Sa-Su.
M: Hand-cut several branches of a large maple tree. Finish digging foundation hole (approx 6 tons of soil). Walk dog 1.5 miles. Tu: Errands in morning. Saw/lop branches to a manageable size. Rake apples in evening (yes, this was a workout!). W: 3 mile hike with kids. Saw/lop branches, and pile next to fire pit. Walk dog 1.5 miles. Th: Lightly active all day (work in the field). Walk dog 1.5 miles. F: Lightly active in the afternoon (work in the field). Bike commute 28 miles. Sa: Rest day. Light yard work and fix some small engines. Walk dog 1.5 miles. Su: 11-mile trail run w/ 2,000' elevation gain. I felt GREAT! I wasn't pushing myself, barely getting anaerobic on hills, and still I set several PRs. One hill was 600' in 0.75 miles and I ran the entire way.
Average calories in/out: 2200/3300.
Weight is 178.5 as of this morning. Down 17 from April 30 when I started watching my diet (down 13.5 since June 18 when I started counting my calories). My pre-race goal was 180. I'll likely gain a couple pounds over the course of the week... so I'll be right where I wanted to be.
Everything has come together just before this weekend's Spartan Race. Sunday's run was a big confidence booster. Weight is down. No aches, pains, or stiffness. I might do a short run tomorrow, and a shorter run Thursday... with active rest the remainder of the week.

I didn't do an update the week before last. I had an okay week, just okay. Still trying to get back into my running groove.
M: Yoga 1.5 hours Tu: Rest W: Run 3.3 Miles Th: Rest F: Run 1.3 miles Sa: Walked dogs a hilly 3.5 Miles Su:"Run" 1.3 Miles - Started experiencing some pretty intense knee pain in my right knee about 1/4 mile in. Decided to throw in the towel a little further down the trail and walked back to the car the rest of the way.
--------------------- M: Looks like I took the dogs for a 1.7 mile walk (I don't remember it, but it's in my Garmin data, so it must be true. lol). We spent the entire day setting up our new bedroom from Ikea. Tu: Rest - worked late W: Rest - worked late Th: Rest - worked late F: Run 3.2 miles. Knee was feeling much better this day. Just took it slow and easy. Sa: 2.79 mile dog walk. Knee had its moments, but overall, better. I think I tweaked it on our dog walk the Sat before. Su: Run 5 miles. Muscles felt fatigued as it's been a while since I've covered that distance. Hopefully the muscles start feeling better once my routine resumes. I spent the rest of the day running up and down the stairs, breaking down cardboard and trying to get the bedroom ready for the last of the furniture to be built (2 dressers). Also did a quick 1 mile dog walk in the evening. I ended the day with 19,000 steps.
I should note, my longer dog walks are pretty hilly, with about 500' elevation gain. Olly wasn't happy during our Sat walk. I must have started too late (around 10:30am). While it was only 72* out, the sun was pretty intense and she kept laying down in the shade mid-step. Poor thing.

M-Th: Taper... active rest. F: Drive to campsite Sa: Spartan Beast. Brutal. One of the hardest things I've ever done. 13+ miles with 6,000'+ elevation gain and 32 obstacles = 7 hours of pain... exactly as it should be. Every one of my leg muscles cramped at one point or another. Nearly every racer I talked to had cramps, most worse than me. The hot temperature, 73F dewpoint, and intense sun didn't help. I only failed 3 obstacles, and had a good chance at each. On 2 of the 3, I got to the last rope/ring but failed to reach the bell. Su: Ouch

Congratulations, walkswithblackflies! The heat alone would have left me cowering in a dark corner for days. Quite an accomplishment! Hopefully your muscles are on the road to recovery.

The heat alone would have left me cowering in a dark corner for days I just added that the dewpoint was 73F in the afternoon. Brutal. Thankfully, training during the hot and humid weather this summer prepared me for the heat.

Another bad week, last week. But I'm going to post it as sort of a public shaming. lol M: Nada - Not even Yoga, as it was cancelled. Tu: Run 3.2 miles W: Negative Th: Nope F: Walked the dogs 1 mile; walked back and forth between car and campsite at Pickle Gulch Sa: walked back and forth between car and campsite at Pickle Gulch Su: walked back and forth between car and campsite at Pickle Gulch I also ate like complete crap over the weekend. Completely off my diet. I felt so sluggish yesterday, that I couldn't even bring myself to go to Yoga. Back on the diet as of yesterday, and back to running this morning. Hopefully I can muster the energy to continue with the running through the rest of the week. I'm pretty sure dog $h!t has felt better than I do right now.

We all have those weeks. And if you're stupid like me, sometimes you NEED those weeks to provide some perspective. The best thing you can do is put in the past and move forward.

A recovery week after the Spartan Race. I wasn't close to 100% until Friday.
M: Walk dog 0.5 miles Tu: Walk dog 0.75 miles W: Bike commute 13 miles. Th: Bike commute 15 miles. Walk dog 1.25 miles, run 0.25 miles. F: Walk dog 1.5 miles. Sa: Run 5k with my 9-year-old son. It was his first. He was able to exceed my expectations... he didn't have to walk or stop, and he averaged 11-minute miles. Light yard work. Su: Trail run 5 hilly miles at Colgate University. Struggled a bit for first half, then got my legs under me. Last 1/4 mile was a hill that varied between 25%-45% grade. Light yard work.
Between Sunday evening and Thursday morning, I gained 5.5 pounds! Obviously, water weight due to swelling/inflammation since I lost 4 lbs Thursday evening! Weight has been steady since then.
