Limited time due to holiday stuff, and working overtime. And cold, cold, cold. My wife and kids have strep throat. So far, I'm good. Hopefully I can continue to fight it off.
M: Walk 3/4 mile in blizzard conditions (-25 windchill); shovel driveway Th: 3.5 mile run (at 10:30pm, snowing/-5F) F: 3 mile run (at 9:30pm, 10F) Sa: Downhill skiing Su: 10 snowy hill repeats at abandoned quarry (running, about 100' each at 20% grade), -5F
2017 goal was to lose 10 lbs... I ended up losing 4. However, pants are fitting better... so that's something. At one point (October?), I had lost 9, but I've added a few pounds since the cold weather has moved in. Another trend I noticed... my resting heart rate (measured by my FitBit) decreased through September, then increased as days shortened. I noticed the same thing the year before, too.

Gee, walkswithblackflies, I wonder why your fitness drops when it's too cold and nasty outside to poke a nose out? Maybe time for me to start reporting in here again. I've been testing the waters all fall for a return to regular running, and the jury is still out on practicality of that. But as of now, I'm doing a mix of running, biking, swimming, and (very) modest weight work. I did manage to do some kind of workout every single day through the holidays, even while at the in-laws (no pool or weights there, but we took our bikes). If my 2017 goal was to lose weight, I didn't really make it. If it was to avoid gaining more, I'm good.

So, to end 2017, I managed a gorgeous road/trail run in Sedona, 4.1 miles, on 26th
And the 29th, my birthday, I ran 4.3 miles back home.
We had crazy inversions on the 30th-1st, bringing 35-55* temps at home and single digit temps down in the flats of town. So, I managed a very chilly dog walk on the 1st.
Back to work today. I wanted to get out for a run today, but it's month end close (year end, to boot) which means long hours. Taking it one day at a time and hoping for a good run soon.

Day 1 of the diet (just eating healthier) didn't go as planned. I was going to get salad fixins when a couple of co-workers said they were going to the supermarket, so I went with them. What I didn't know was they were going to the burger bar at the supermarket. OK, a little unplanned cheat won't hurt much. Then in the evening I was hungry, so I got a little bowl of jambalaya instead of a sugary/fatty snack (so actually not an unhealthy choice). Well, I put a new hot sauce on it, and it was about 10x hotter than I expected. To relieve the burn, I drank a little chocolate milk, to no effect. So then I sucked on some ice cream, which worked well. So Day 1 of the diet included a burger, fries, jambalaya, chocolate milk, and ice cream. I don't think that's how it works.

Now I gone and done it. Yesterday, on my 2nd set of squats (light, only 95 lbs) I tweaked my low back. I tried adjusting the bar on my back, so I gave the bar a little momentum to lift it off my shoulders and re-position, and on my next rep it went out. I wonder if it actually started on Sunday when I took a mis-step on the trail and "jammed" my lower back. I didn't think anything of it even a minute after the mis-step, but now it seems like it could have contributed.
Anywho, I'm getting around fine (I actually went downhill skiing last night, and did upper back weights today). It's just stiff with a little pain... especially if I've been sitting for any length of time. So I don't think there is any damage to any discs. And thankfully it is not affecting my sacrum, which has been my issue in years past. But it's gonna be awhile before I do any squats or deadlifts. And when I do, I think I'm going to have to start wearing a belt, even with light weights, and not "bottom-out" on squats.

Went for a nice mountain bike ride, intending just 10 miles or so because I have not ridden since before Thanksgiving. It was a beautiful sunny but cool day and I felt good, so I kept going. 25 miles later I finally returned feeling pretty refreshed. I definitely feel my thighs this morning.

M: Haul firewood in my new pulk. Not much of a workout, but a good use of the pulk. Tu: Shovel snow (about 6"). W: Started doing squats, but I threw my back out. so I did some stretching then a 1.5 mile run. Downhill skiing in the evening. Th: Weights... upper back, bis. 5 mile run in snow. F: Work in the freezing cold in the morning. Then weights... chest, shoulders, tris. Shovel snow (about 9"). Sa: Shovel snow (about 9"). I don't remember doing anything else, yet I ended up with more than 10,000 steps. A bit sore from weights earlier in the week. Su: Downhill skiing in beautiful powder. Still a bit sore from weights.
My back has healed nicely... now just some initial stiffness after sitting for awhile. And it appears I weathered the strep throat that affected the rest of my family.
I've gained 5 lbs since Xmas. I haven't been eating horribly, but it's time to double-down on diet. Also, I have to stop eating meals at 9:00 pm. This week should see a return to a more normal schedule (and temperatures), which should help.
To augment my Spartan training I purchased two military duffel bags. I'll fill them with bags of sand for farmer's carry, hercules hoist, shoulder carry, heavybag lift over shoulder, etc. Nothing like wrestling some sand to build that "old man strength".
