This is the thread for posting your THREE best photos of 2017. The guidelines are that you decide the criteria for why it makes your top-3, technically or otherwise. However, please let us know that reason. Previous years' threads: 2016, 2015.

Here's my top-3, in no particular order: "Preening" ~ One of my favorite type of photo is one that features patterns in nature. That was the thinking behind this composition. I shot this photo through a chain link fence. I got 'rid' of the fence by getting really close to the fence and using a wide open aperture for a shallow depth of field. "Finger of light" ~ Near the town of Lake Placid, in New York's Adirondack Mountains, the Ausable River passes through a narrow rocky gorge. Four impressive waterfalls provide sound and fury, as viewed from the precarious comfort of a boardwalk stapled to the side of the gorge. When I got to my shooting location I realized that the beam of sunlight in the background was going to make for a difficult shot. However, if I could include it the whole thing might pop. I ended up taking 4 photos at different exposure settings and then blending them together. "Mount Colden" ~ This year I took many photos of myself. Since I'm a solo hiker I'd begun to realize that my photos were usually too 'aloof'; they lacked that human connection, that others had no problem capturing. For this photo, I had just come down from Mount Colden's summit and was approaching a false summit. I thought that I could capture that moment, so I set up the camera for a 10sec timed photo. I fired off the shot and ran to the spot I'd picked out. As I approached it I realized that there was a puddle there. Whoops! I stood in the puddle took a step and froze. Click. I'd have to look through mine, but I have to say the rose I posted yesterday would be in that top three.

Ah, a nice excuse to wander through the year's photos I don't feel like I had any really amazing ones this year, but I think there might be some pretty nice ones, so I'll see what I can find.

rebeccad , I had the same problem. I didn't really have a stand out photo, although if you twisted my arm I'd have pointed to the peacock picture. However, with three photos, the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts...

Made me smile a bit. Your photography is on another plane from mine, and I'd love to have some of your "poor" photos (But not, apparently, love it enough to put in the work. I know why my pictures aren't all they could be).

Your Finger of Light looks like it should be in Rivendell. Really great shot, even if it is multiple shots.

I have a hard time choosing a favorite photo from each trip, let alone narrowing down the whole year! It was a good year, though. A few of my faves: This was a lucky shot as this girl never stops moving, and I didn't even notice the reflection of her mom (my sister) in her eye until later. The Matterhorn A bit staged, but visiting a Navajo slot canyon that wasn't Antelope Canyon and crawling with people was a pretty special day!

I really like that Navajo Slot Canyon, directions? You still need to go in with a Navajo guide...it's just recently opened and less popular than Antelope Canyon. www.antelopecanyon-x.com/

Slide 22 is an extraordinary expanse of the uncommon in nature color purplish-blue at Carizzo Plain NM. At a miles distance where the individual flowers were indistinct, it looked like a sea of purple Koolaide.
Slide 46. Good eye for the aesthetic Zeke, am impressed. I spent a long time, almost an hour studying exactly where to position my camera on the tripod that was a geometric puzzle.
Slide 58 shows the backpacker in you. An aesthetic orientation affected by a place one would like to go down and explore and camp at, especially mid to late August when the waters are no longer chilly and mosquitoes have long gone.
thanks Zeke
