Now that's funny!! I think those people may have been in the July 4th flotilla I was in.

Bateauxdriver lives on the Amite River near Port Vincent. His living quarters in his house sit 8 feet off the ground. This morning, he showed a video of water about 2-3 inches deep on his deck, which means it is in his house as well. Some of the pictures he is posting occasionally really tell a sad story. He is complaining about the boaters, since the wake is causing more damage just from the rise of those couple of inches for a brief time. This is the official gauge, but there hasn't been an actual change or reading since about 2 AM today.

It's a mess in his area. His house is built high because they often get water in that area, but I don't think it's ever gotten into into his living area before this historic flood.

I hear you about that area being a mess. His living space is almost 3 ft above the previous record flood. Would've thought that was sufficient. Nope. This flood is 3 ft higher than the previous record.

It's drastic. 90% or more of Livingston Parish is under water. Likely most of Mark's parish (Ascension), much of East Baton Rouge, lesser parts of other parishes. As the water continues to move downstream, there will be more devastation.

As the water continues to move downstream, there will be more devastation. Like they need that. New Iberia's already flooded. But the water's gotta go somewhere, and it will find its own way.

Livingston and Ascension are in the greater Baton Rouge metropolitan area. East Baton Rouge Parish, where the state capital of Baton Rouge is located, had damage on all parts of the parish, but my office did not flood. (Whether the roof held is a different question!)

Oh yes, Reuben reminds me that the western side of south La was also devastated with flooding. I haven't seen too much coverage of that area, but all reports are pretty bad.

I spoke with some friends on the Teche. They're flooded, but OK.

Is he posting this video on this forum? No, on FB. Latest report is just in, and the water at his house is beginning to recede. One small part of the house stayed above water. There will be clean up to be done.

Scary stuff. Hoping everyone will be safe, and you all know we will do whatever we can as the need arises (I was about to say we'd know what was needed when the dust settles. But that seemed the wrong metaphor...).

Yikes! I hope bateauxdriver comes out with as little damage as possible. It feels like a weak and puny wish under the circumstances.

Bateaux and his family are some of the best, toughest people I know. If anyone comes out of this fine, it'll be them. In fact, they'll probably be helping others along the way.

Reading this stuff, I'm reminded of what Sam Kinison, the standup comic, once quipped about sending food to people who live in the desert. He said, "Send 'em U-Hauls, send 'em luggage...there wouldn't be world hunger if those people would move where the food is - nothing grows in the desert!" www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0q4o58pKwAWell, people in Louisiana are living in the swamps. It floods in the swamps. After all, that's what a swamp is: a swamp is flooded land.
