Too bad all that rain isn't falling someplace that could use it.

Too bad all that rain isn't falling someplace that could use it. For real. We had a break this morning, but scattered showers are hitting the worst of the flooded area right now. The rivers haven't yet crested, and more people are being flooded out today. Tens of thousands, if not more, are suddenly and unexpectedly displaced. I am fine. BateauxDriver and his family are safe, but the water is rising at his home. MississippiRob's house is flooded and his truck is underwater. Those who know Stacey from HOTB - her house is flooded. Bateaux and Rob live about 45 minutes east of me, Stacey is an hour to the west. This is really widespread devastation.

I've seen reports that 1500 people are stranded on I-12, and a few rivers are starting to flow backwards. I spoke with Dean and he says he's OK for now.

A number of my friends actually stayed in their cars on the interstate overnight. Some were evacuating themselves, and some had gone to help others before getting stranded on their way home. I can't imagine 24 hours sitting in my car.

Thanks. The shelters are overflowing with donations, thankfully. Once the water recedes, I suspect the region will need volunteers, much like after Katrina, for clean up and rebuilding. If I hear of anything urgent, I'll let y'all know. Thank you!!

"The Amite River at Denham Springs was at 43.5 feet Monday after reaching 46.2 feet. Flood stage is 29 feet."
46.2 feet is 17 feet (60%) above flood stage.

That far over flood stage, I wonder what the width and volume are. The incremental change in both must be enormous for each incremental change in depth.

I don't know about the volume, but an idea of the width can be seen from any number of aerial pics of the area. I see plenty of buildings, trees, and water, but a lot fewer roads, yards, and fields.
1 foot * 1 square mile = a lot.

The bridge in Breaux Bridge (between Baton Rouge and Lafayette) "lifted" due to floodwaters. If you've been to HOTB, Breaux Bridge is more or less due north of the campground at I-10. So you can bet your sweet bippy that Lake Fausse Pointe State Park is completely underwater.

On Friday, the Amite was at 15'. It is unbelievable that it rose over 31 feet so quickly!
