That's true of people who are dehydrated. You don't think clearly, and often you don't understand just how dire your situation is. So you send a few texts asking for help. You're hot and tired. You lie down, thinking that if you rest for a few minutes it will be better...
Not surprising that they might have saved that last bit of water for their child...

They took a total of 1.5 liters for three people and a dog for eight hours. It doesn't sound to me like the parents were thinking clearly even at the trailhead with mild 76° temperatures. That is far too little water even if the temperatures were never expected to get warmer for the entire day. I thought news articles were claiming the man at least had some hiking experience. But (may they rest in peace) he led his family on a suicide mission. And I'm sure he didn't mean to.

In cycling physiologists have run lab experiments on people’s hydration needs and various performance markers both of power generation (watt meter on the stationary bike) and cognition. Iirc it takes a shockingly small hydration deficit, maybe just over 500 ml, before measurable decreases in mental capacity and power generation capability begin to appear, and and both those capacities decrease rapidly as dehydration results in a less and less healthy ionic balance in our muscles and brains; both of which are literally saltwater based machines.
it’s so terribly tragic that waters 2 lb per quart weight tends to push people into these sorts of crises.
