No apparent trauma as reported is why they’re looking at hazmat: it’s a hard rock mining area so CO or CO2 is suspected.
Awful thing.

Horrible thing. I hope the cause can be pin-pointed and corrected. I'd like to hear more when the time comes.

Just a little additional bit of information here. It was just a day hike. I had wondered if maybe they were using a stove in a tent but I guess not:

Oops. I did not see this and started another thread. I move my comments here.
The article notes that the scene is being treated as a HAZMAT site, and that perhaps a carbon monoxide leak near an old mine is the cause of death.
I have heard that gangs have used plots in the remote areas of the Sierra to grow pot. I wonder if the family ran into trouble that way, and perhaps the police are diverting attention. Probably not likely, but it is a strange situation.

I read of discounting the mine theory and a suspicion that an algae bloom may be to blame. Not sure if it would be from drinking the water or a gas/vapor released by the algae. No physical trauma visible to any of the bodies.

The western drought has probably resulted in pools of stagnant water where there were once flowing streams.

This is getting to be quite a bizarre story. So now authorities are treating the deaths as homicide until they have reason to believe otherwise.

“ Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese said: "I've been here for 20 years, and I've never seen a death-related case like this.
"There's no obvious indicators of how it occurred.”
Homicide out of an excess of caution. Reasonable enough.
Undoubtedly there are stricter rules in evidence preservation and such with a preliminary labeling of potential homicide.

Homicide? Based on what? So the killer kills the dog so the discovery of the bodies is delayed?

Homicide is the proper way to treat evidence until further information is discovered, like an autopsy report.

Good point Zeke, I didn't think about that angle.

Homicide? Based on what? So the killer kills the dog so the discovery of the bodies is delayed? Also it could be murder/suicide. One of the adults poisoned the whole family including themselves. I don't think so and definitely hope not.
