I’m still inclined to an environmental hazard. The tests will give the information.

Yeah, trauma that an autopsy would have discovered would likely have been evident to the responders at the scene. It’s up to the toxicology screens to sort things out.

What zeke said. Homicide is the word for any human death caused by another human, whether intentional or not, whether the other person even knows he caused the death or not. It includes murder, manslaughter, accidental killings, justifiable killings, excusable killings (e.g., self-defense), negligent killings, euthanasia, war deaths, capital punishment, etc. Saying they're treating the deaths as homicide simply means they don't (yet) have evidence of a natural cause so they're investigating potential human causes.
Creepy situation.

So no toxicology results yet. So how can they rule out a chemical cause?

A very weird story. I did trail work on that exact trail a couple of years ago, right after the fire. It was just bare dirt and a few sticks of burnt trees....some standing, and others fallen across the trail. We cleared the trail basically down to the river. In a few places the tree roots themselves had burned right into the ground, leaving enormous holes and channels in the dirt.
It's hard to imagine that being a nice hike today. It's an exposed hillside all the way down to the river. And you can see that from the top.
I guess if you started it, you might want to make it to the river, just to say that you saw at least one pleasant thing on the hike. But then it's a long hot slog back up to the top. And all four of them died in the same place.

So no toxicology results yet. So how can they rule out a chemical cause? I don't think they ruled out a chemical cause, only a particular category of chemical causes: "exposure to chemicals along the trail the family were on", presumably by testing conducted in the area. (The story does specifically mention testing water in the vicinity). I don't think that rules out exposure to chemicals they had with them or to which they had previously been exposed elsewhere.

Trail closed until further notice. Also, some clarification on what's been ruled out. linkSo, they haven't detected anything on the trail itself, but haven't ruled out hazards in the general vicinity.

Although very unlikey I'm guessing they've already tested the water in the vicinity.

Savage Lundy Trail? Sheesh. Maybe Savage Lundy did it.
I assume some weird suicide pact is ruled out?
Bizarre situation.

I assume some weird suicide pact is ruled out? I don't think so. Although they've said they don't have reason to suspect it and otherwise have been circumspect, they haven't declared it ruled out.

Last theory I heard was a lightning strike. Wouldn't that leave visible signs on the bodies?
