There’s been some drama about the 2020 PCT class, but the guy who does the Mt SanJac report says on a video he’s only seen a few thru-hikers with only a few foot-steps on 19 March report. There’s been 2 snows since, and doubt thru hikers in skimpy Altras are trying a day or night run to get to IH-10.
So the few true “thrus” who made it past 100 (the last Thursday AM bus to San Diego) have been sidelined in Idyllwild and Julian drinking coffee/beer while filling beds at night.

Also sort of small town/big city, tickets are reportedly being issued as there’s no parking at forest service parking lots/campgrounds in Los Angeles county and at least some of the FS TH-CG facing San Diego. Also Kern County has a patrol at the aquaduct trailhead (probably for mtn bikers, but it is a main water route).
If wanting up in the hills, people are gonna have to earn it rucking through greater Los Angeles or going stealth through exburbia San Diego.

We are kind of going through the same thing. Our Foothill communities are feeling the ebb of Denver and suburbs heading for the mountains to hike. The Governor issued Stay At Home Order lists exercise (in the form of running, walking, hiking, and bicycling) as essential acts to leave your home. Unfortunately, that means they are heading to the mountains where we live.
The US Forest Service has recently closed TH's and roads to popular TH's. No idea if it's working.
In addition to all of this, our rescue teams, fire depts and other resources (hospitals, life flight) are so limited for rescues. I wish people would think before they go out and put their lives and other lives in danger. :(

13 cases in Mono County now. They are only testing the sickest people as they don't have enough tests.

I live in a small town. Here we sit without a virus problem as far as I know. Still locked myself down more-or-less and take needed precautions (try selling these actions to some of the hued necks here). But, in a week and a half turkey season starts. Usually a lot of out of town people come in to hunt. Here we have an eatery that, fortunately, shut down because of the virus, but do have a convenience gas station and a Dollar General (big town) that would give the hunters a place to buy junk food, ice, and beer. Close by is a state conservation area (7 miles) that gets a lot of out of town hunters/campers. Hunting shuts down at 1 every day. Not much to do after 1. Hunters, of course, visit each other at the camp grounds. I worry that many will not heed the stay at home call or the six foot suggestion and come up from St Louis. This is Missouri where the state's Republican governor is doing relatively little about the virus. I wrote letters, but to no avail. The state parks did close their camp grounds, but not the Conservation Department. Scary.

I live in a small town, ... visit each other at the camp grounds. I worry that many will not heed the stay at home call or the six foot suggestion ... I’d cast aside any doubt ... they won’t take it seriously. We’ve had entrance lines to supermarkets in the cities lined off with tape 6 ft apart and some dummie comes dragging through the new personal space.

First death in Mono County yesterday
Meanwhile there are hard closures of Travertine and Buckeye Hot Springs and folks are parking at the K-rail and walking in. Mostly out of state license plates noted. Hundreds ascended the Sherwin Bowl to ski last weekend. They even triggered a small avalanche, but luckily no one got hurt. Campers are seen driving around the closed signs on Movie Road in the Alabama Hills.

Will locals start harassing out of state plate people? Read something about that in Maine or such. Guns involved to keep 3 city folk in their cabin (rental?) just in case they are infected. Lot of guns out here in da country. Lot of, for lack of another word, crazies with bias tendencies. Dem thar city folk shunt be comin out here nows ya nos.

Delaware has put out of state people on notice vehicles showing out of state plates are subject to police stops and interrogation in the effort to enforce the mandatory 14 day quarantine period for anyone arriving from out of state. governor.delaware.gov/health-soe/seventh-state-of-emergency/“Passing through” is allowed so they’re not barricading I-95.

Part of this is not understanding per capita. Los Angeles looks bad until looking at the total number of people in LA (40 million in the greater basin area). Plus there’s better healthcare with 2 major universities with med schools (USC and UCLA) ... and now the Navy hospital ship Mercy for non-virus emergencies. The situation is different then New York which is more vertical (where people cannot avoid each other) and likely older than the vertical areas of LA which have attracted youngish workers (DTLA is a thing). Think when the virus calms down though, many urban families may leave for the suburbs. Imagine trying to entertain young kids in an apartment when the playgrounds are closed? Will locals start harassing out of state plate people? Read something about that in Maine or such. Guns involved to keep 3 city folk in their cabin (rental?) just in case they are infected. Lot of guns out here in da country. Lot of, for lack of another word, crazies with bias tendencies. Dem thar city folk shunt be comin out here nows ya nos. Had a post on that and it was a cabin full of long time workers from New Jersey. If they’d been in the community for almost 2 weeks, their exposure would have been the same.

Will locals start harassing out of state plate people? Last weekend I drove over our local mountains to a series of canyon to hike some trails that are not yet part of our National Forest system. Over the last two decades the area has become a major climbing hotspot (Tensleep, WY). The Bighorn NF closes the area campground but keeps the two pit toilets (newer) open all year to accommodate the climbers and allows dispersed camping along a section of abandoned highway. It is a beautiful canyonlands scene and I was there for the hike and the first spring arrival birding. I will admit a bit of local bile come up when I saw cars and vans from six different states, including a few hot spotters, scattered through out the canyon. The local counties are of 8k and 10k with tiny struggling hospitals and an aging population. Go home now!
