My goodness, that's a nasty set of comments overall. Two thoughts:
1. If you are asked to self-quarantine, that doesn't mean a snow day to go off and play however you want. It means you should stay IN PLACE and not track your germs into other communities.
2. I live in Napa, where the Vintners Association has asked all member wineries to close their tastings rooms, so there is no reason for those in "self-quarantine" to visit us and bring us their germs. Other tourism communities might consider similar approaches...

Thanks for posting this. I am a member and moderator of some other FB sites. Even some of the boomer Birders in the most affected populations are resisting any social restraints. And many of those climbers are beat back to their mountain towns in UT, CO, MT and WY and we are going to be screwed. So many are just like Bishop and Moab with limited facilities and an aging population.

Not that the outside is bad but with no auto ban this is probably getting into small communities as we speak somehow/someway by 4 wheels. Many young people are already stir-crazy. Not that they are alone ... Social distancing on the back of otherwise deserted beach bus (SD had a Hep A outbreak so they are confident they can keep surfaces clean), the front was packed with seniors (the most vulnerable) sitting next to each other raving the fresh air of the beach would be great! Sigh ...

Articles like this make me sad and I think it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. My boyfriend came over yesterday afternoon exasperated that he couldn't find "his" eggs anywhere, a local organic brand that he always gets. He went on to tell me that he went to four stores looking for it, and also how he'd gone to Costo but left because the lines were too long. I confess I was a little judgmental... reminded him about our friend's FB profile that simply says #StayTheF**kHome. She works at Trader Joe's and is not only exhausted, but disgusted. Still, he will probably go to a funeral this Friday. I get it that he's going stir-crazy. I think this is going to test a lot of relationships, families, communities. For me, the whole introvert thing is working in my favor. Pretty content working from home, in my sweats, my puppy sleeping at my feet.

I hope enough people shelter in place for this to actually work...I have my doubts. People can be pretty stupid. To be fair, I think it's often with the best of intentions. In our case, my boyfriend is really concerned about how this is impacting our local businesses. The big chain supermarket now has an on-line ordering system where customers can pick up their groceries curb-side after buying everything online. They have a skeletal staff cloistered inside filling orders and customers are just pulling up at the appointed time. It seems to be working pretty well and the store is able to maintain business with reduced risk to its staff and the community. There are a few small independent stores trying to do something similar (order by phone, meet you in the parking lot...) but not as effectively. No doubt, they will be hit hard. I'm sure my boyfriend's first thought was to make his usual rounds and give them business. Of course, videos are now circulating of foreign visitors in Spain, partying it up in the streets, belligerent toward law enforcement officers who are desperately trying to get them to go back to their hotels. (Have to admit, I was SO grateful that the tourists I saw weren't American.)

Like the old adage says "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
We may be on that road right now.

Bouldering has always been a social, bro climbing sport like indoor climbing and is popular in Southern California with places like Joshua Tree now in a like situation. Good numbers of such are also skiers and snow boarders, that are now moving to their other fun. Beaches are likely seeing density increases too with surfers.
Many enthusiasts will predictably choose to escape any shelter in place orders by leaving their urban area residences that is allowed, expected, and stated so within orders as "exercise", but that does not mean once out in such regions that moving close to others outside one's own party is then acceptable. One can expect these same behaviors will not roll out smoothly in many other life situations and communities but through communication and news like this, the better thinking people will reign in the less considerate behaviors. This actually just took place on our huge ski enthusiast board. Within a single week, many forum posting fresh powder skiing enthusiasts with plans to avoid the majority of closed resort were detailing plans to go to the few still open small resorts, have through peer pressure either cancelled or figured out how to do so safely. For instance only singles or same group folks on chairs, closing enclosed lifts like gondolas, closing indoor facilities while serving food outside, pushing ski and board rentals outside shops, etc.
Intelligent approaches to doing it right while still allowing people to participate in outdoor activities in ways that have been thought out. I myself expect to be out doing some local hiking, landscape photography, and backcountry skiing. A person might ask, "Well what happens on a narrow mountain trail when two people have to pass?" Simple just think as we face novel situations. Maybe just hold one's breath for a few seconds in passing as such places are rarely dead calm, as air moves about and away.
