At least three of those birds are not from this part of the world. So you either went on a very cool vacation or maybe visited an aviary?

Yup, I just returned from a trip, although it was more business than vacation, so no trip report.

Not a great shot, but pretty good given full zoom on a moving bird, then cropped. I don't know what kind of raptor it is. It flew over my head as some 11,000' in the Sierra.

Looks like some type of falcon (or maybe a hawk), but I would defer to someone who actually knows.

Red tailed hawk. Which is a fairly safe bet when in doubt. More red tails than most others. I took the time to grab a shot off the web to make sure.

The wing tips are more like those of a gull, which is why I thought falcon, maybe even a peregrine falcon, and not a hawk.

I had another look. The wing tips do look a bit unusual but I suppose it is because it was gliding but not soaring. I edited the photo to get a closer look , it does match (I think) a known photo of a red tailed hawk. (light morph)

I think you guys are right (a run of the mill red-tailed hawk?...so underwhelming). FYI: Here’s a peregrine falcon for comparison (not my photo):

Red tail hawk makes the most sense. I just hadn’t seen one from that angle, I guess, because it looked too light, and I couldn’t see the redness of the tail. But that would be the most likely bird. franco I didn’t think I could zoom in that much without being all fuzzy. Your edit looks really clear. I’ll have to play with it more.

In Franco’s edit you can actually see a bit of red in the belly which makes me more convinced that it’s a red-tailed hawk and not some other type of hawk.

I'm still taking lots of bird photos. This one is of a Red Rumped parrot, from yesterday
