How in the world did I miss this thread? I bleed coffee - although I do need a little cream. I've never licked an ashtray, but black coffee makes me imagine that's how licking one might taste.
Which brings me to a trail question (if this was asked elsewhere, forgive me - I haven't read the entire thread) -
Hike #1 - Starbx Via instant. Couldn't stomach past 2 cups. Hikes #2 & #3 - Starbx ground with an ultra-light pour-over. Happy girl!
But the ground coffee smell was strong and took over everything in the Bear Vault. And I worried about attracting bears. Your experience? Is this even a real concern/issue?

When camping, hot and black, and it better not look like tea. I'm not that picky with my brands as long as it's drinkable. At home I'll usually add a little milk.

I started out drinking coffee black, and learned to add cream in my 20s, in theory to make it easier on the stomach. I think that idea has been disproven, but I got hooked. I can still drink it black, but as you all note, if you're drinking it black, it has to be good. So good that it rules out most of the coffee out there. Anyway the Nido adds food value on the trail! the ground coffee smell was strong and took over everything in the Bear Vault. And I worried about attracting bears. Your experience? Is this even a real concern/issue? I've wondered that too. Bears may not like coffee (who knows?), but they are attracted to odors, of all sorts. So it could, I guess, draw one who just wants to check it out. And, of course, you need to haul out the grounds, so that's less appealing too. Basically, I'd do better just to get used to drinking tea--and I've done that, some trips, before Via. I'd drink instant for about 3 days, then it would be too disgusting, and I'd switch to tea.

I'm glad to see I'm not nearly as an addict as others. Wheww...usually two 16oz mugs during the day. Warm weather I use my french press to make cold brew and keep a jar of that in the fridge. Love it.
Usually cooking up Cameron's Organic Breakfast Blend or Woods & Waters blend. Local grocery store has whole beans in bulk. I'm probably in the minority in that I prefer lighter blends. If I have access, I'm really fond of the AM Blend from Black Coffee Roasting Company out of Missoula.
Did get the chance to meet a Costa Rican couple with a small coffee farm. Good people, and the next time I take students down I think we'll be selling some of theirs for a fundraiser.
