I will be putting the large versions of our header images into this thread, for the artist to comment on and so that people can see the full image (especially for those that have been cropped to fit). Since I let Gali's image get away, we'll start from now. Our opening header image is by markskor , and is his painting of the Tuolumne Meadows store in Yosemite National Park. Here it is in the larger version: Markskor, please come and add any comments or thoughts you want to share about your painting! Also--I think this may be a crop of your original, so please drop in the original if you will.

TM Store watercolor done on site, (plein air), last summer using a 1/2 sheet of Arches, 140 pound, cold press, ultra-white paper... Winsor Newton watercolors... approx 22" / 16". In watercolor, there is no white paint per se...You have to think/ plan ahead and "save the white" from the paper itself. Similarly, an orange wash was laid in first, and the green foliage carefully painted in to establish the tree trunks and branches afterwards. mark

This photo was taken during a 2006 trip to the Atlatna River headwaters in Gates of the Arctic National Park. My wife & I base-camped in the valley below (by the lake in the background of the photo), and we day-hiked the mountains surrounding that valley. This involved climbing 1500-2000 feet to get to the most glorious ridge walking you can imagine. We timed this to be during the southern migration of the Western Arctic Caribou herd through the Brooks Mountain range. The caribou during this trip were incredible ... we were seeing many herds of 200-300 caribou trek south through the valley & hills all trip long. This shot was taken on our last full day there, and we had just completed the climb up to a ridge we planned on hiking that day. My wife spotted this short tailed weasel among some rocks, and I quickly took my camera out of my pack to get a photo. We've seen these weasels in the past, but have never been able to get a decent photo - so I was in a bit of panic. Anyway, I got the camera out, had the weasel in my viewfinder, and pressed the shutter ... only to find that it had disappeared in that blink of any eye! Uttering a few bad words while trying to re-find this cute little guy didn't help much because he was long gone. So I'm standing there muttering to myself (with my wife laughing her butt off) when I check my camera to see just how much 'nothing' I managed to capture ... and then I see this photo. I was shocked to say the least! So I can honestly say that it was an incredible lack of talent that achieved this really sweet photo - which now adorns a wall in our house.

Great story! You ended up with a shot that really captures the speed and energy of the little guy!

Woohoo!
This was a fun one. It's based on pictographs overhanging a ledge a few hundred yards from the famous Quail Panel in Grand Gulch, UT. They appear to have been created over a long period, with the cream-colored ones being older than the red.
It's a 5-plate woodblock print using Guerra pigment dispersions on Nishinouchi paper (about 90% kozo). It is 2.5" x 3", so most screens show it a bit over actual size. Because it's so small and I had to make so many of them, I carved four copies per block, sort of like a pane of postage stamps, so there are tiny differences among the final prints. Printing for this edition size usually takes much longer than carving per block, but I wouldn't do multiple carvings of anything bigger or more complicated.

That's cool! I'm not sure I'd realized it wasn't a photo of the actual handprints, though that explains the brown streaks that were confusing me a little

For nearly two years (2015/16) this was the view I had going to and from work on a daily basis. The Wyoming side of the Tetons have the best light in the morning because they are East facing, gathering all that beautiful, sharp light... as I recall, this particular morning was a crisp -28*F.

this particular morning was a crisp -28*F. That's cold! But hard to argue with that view on your commute

This was on the Garfield Ridge trail, right past Mt Lafayette, in the White Mountains of NH. I had been gaining on that fellow, and had wanted to just get a shot of the three cairns. I took this photo, then waited for him to move further out of the frame, but I like this one better! This was during a hike in July. I set out to do a Pemi Loop, but wound up taking the Franconia Brook Trail down to 13 Falls, which I had always wanted to explore. So a Hemi-Pemi if you will. Thanks!

Shoot—I’m supposed to post the full image, but I’m having trouble remembering how. I’ll get there (I also just noticed the new header).

Here we go. The crop actually makes this a stronger image, with less sky, which in my opinion lets the eye focus more on the main interest, i.e. the ridge line.

When my photo was selected for last month's banner I didn't realize I'd have the honor of selecting this month's photo.
While there were many great photos to chose from, Panatomicx's photo was my choice because, to me, it really captures the essence of backpacking, and frankly reminds me of a Backpacker Magazine cover circa 1976! That also would have been the time frame I was walking all over the Presidential range, so there is a sentimental connection too.
Anyway, I had mentioned to Debora I felt the photo needed to be straightened as the most important fix... doesn't look like that happened.
Here's a straightened version:
