What? You think horizons should run level? I dunno man. Doesn’t that depend on how many times you’ve visited the drinks table?

By the way, where is that? It looks so much like Baldface Mountain where we hiked Monday, but not quite.

Yup. White Mountains. Other side of the national forest from where we were, but there are obviously similarities among the bald places around the region.

I'm supposed to explain the header photo...
15 August 2018 Little Lakes Valley. Samsung Galaxy S5
On the original post I said that I missed this trailhead and visiting this area. It is a nearby trailhead and one that is the most visited, for myself, in my hiking history.
The grasses were just between green and golden in color and I was happy to have the little puff clouds decorating the sky. But I was also dismayed by the trampling of the many little lakeside meadows. Yes, it is a well "loved" area.
The real joy of the day, though, is that my husband and I were hiking a week after his heart converted from a-fib to sinus rhythm and a day after confirming with the cardiologist.

Hi. I'm honored to have my wife's silouette photo of me and our son on the banner now. The photo has very special meaning for me, so I am grateful to have this opportunity to explain how it came about.
This picture was taken last August in the evening on the way up to Mt. Whitney. My Dad, who loved hiking and the Sierra, had just passed on 3 days earlier, so it was the end of one very difficult time and the beginning of another. My wife, son and I had been planning a Whitney trip for the previous week, but didn't go. After Dad passed, I agreed with my wife that it would be a good idea to do some real hard physical work and to bookmark that time with something extraordinary and life-affirming. We were still within the window of our permit, so we packed up the car and drove all day over to Lone Pine and spent the night. We hiked all the next day and arrived at Consultation Lake just after the sun had set over Mt Muir on the Whitney ridge massif, but was still bright on the face of Mt. Irvine above Consultation Lake. My son and I (in the photo) were looking for a level spot to camp, and found a fabulous level shelf overlooking the lake. My wife took this picture with her Lumix camera. She has the best eye in the family. We got up before dawn the next day and summitted within a few hours. I wrote my Dad's name in the register, then we beat it back to camp and the trailhead. It was a beautiful day and a wonderful hike. I will always remember it.

It was a beautiful day and a wonderful hike. I will always remember it. What a great memory. It sounds like you and your wife made the perfect decision to continue with the hike plans.

Okey doke. This was taken at Leopold Lake in late July of 2014. We were on a trip to take a student of mine from Italy on a backpacking trip, and ended up hiking from Gianelli Cabin to here on the first night.
Earlier that afternoon we had noticed a huge smoke plume south of us, near the entrance to Yosemite National Park. That turned out to be the Portal Fire.
Here is an image of the plume:
That fire went on to burn about 5,000 acres over the next week, closing the entrance to the park via Mariposa, CA. But it made for a dramatic photo that evening. Small potatoes compared to the Rim and Ferguson fires, but still huge.
