M: Bike commute 20 miles. Walk dog 1.5 miles. Shoulders/arms. Tu: Bike commute 17 miles. Walk dog 1.5 miles. Pushups workout. Abs. W: No cardio (planned rest). Back. Th: Bike commute 17 miles. Abs. F: Walk around Niagara Falls all day. Sa: Hot. Morning... run 5 miles in an Easy Bake oven. Evening... ride bike 3.5 miles with kids, then walk dog 1.5 miles at sundown. Su: Hot. Light yard work. Walk dog twice, each 1.5 miles. Moderate activity at friend's pool party. I refrained from stuffing my face.
A tough week to stay on-target calorie-wise, but I did a good job. I continue to slowly lose weight.
Saturday's run was the first since I experienced calf tightness the week before. It felt OK. Strangely, my friend is complaining about the same symptoms this week (a deep tightness that you can't stretch).

I'm glad you took time to share a bit here. We never did get a chance to talk about the event other than the firefighters. Good job woman!!

I'm so happy I have friends who are insane. Yesterday, my friend and I were going to do a workout to help prepare me for my upcoming Spartan race. I had printed a list of exercises to choose from. He stated, "Why not do all of them?" And so we did. Just shy of 90 minutes and 1,000 calories.

M: Bike commute 17 miles. Got caught in two thunderstorms, LOL! Tu: Bike commute 17 miles. Do the workout shown a couple posts above. W: Rest Th: Walk 2 miles during lunch. Evening bike ride with kids. Short workout on rings (wasps cut the workout short). F: Bike commute 26 miles. Sa: Morning workout similar to Tuesday's workout. Help a friend fell, limb, buck, and stack 3 medium-sized ash trees. Su: Light yard work all day, including push-mow lawn and rototill garden until underground wasps revolt. Walk dog 1.5 miles.
Average calories in/out: 2226/3030
Weight continues slow, steady decline (10 lbs since May 1). Given my calories in/out, I'm surprised I'm not losing weight quicker. Visual assessment and skinfold bodyfat measurement seem to be "stuck" for over a month now, so it doesn't appear I'm gaining muscle while losing fat. I seem to be holding water weight for the past couple of weeks. Not sure what that's about.
But overall things are trending in the right direction so I'm staying the course.

Remember, your body is trying to adjust to your routine and even with a mutating exercise and eating regime a erratic tactical maneuver should be thrown in to upset the system. For me, as I mutate my diet and exercise, I have been maintaining a small but steady decrease in weight. The erratic tactical maneuver of going on a 9 day 8 night backpacking trip got me a 11ish pound drop in weight. In the 2 weeks since that backpack, I gained 3ish pounds back but then i went on another backpacking trip. The 2nd backpacking trip caused a 6 pound drop in weight. I expect to gain some of the weight back and will work on minimizing the gain back. Our next, erratic tactical maneuver will be in 2 weeks when we go on another backpacking trip.

T'was a bad week. Zero motivation except for Thursday evening (which happened to be after a 10-hour day at work). Bad weather and ungodly humidity sucked the life out of me at the beginning of the week. Cranky and irritable. Wife seemed to have some event to go to every evening, which left me with the kids. Although limiting, I could still have done some kind of workout, but it gave me an excuse not to. Tight low back didn't help things. And after my calf "cramped" again during Monday's run, I was afraid of re-aggravating it. I also was very hungry all the time and I ate like crap. My Spartan race is 9/15 and this should have been a week when I got a lot of exercise in. But my body was having none of it. Pretty much a perfect storm of self-pity.
M: Bike commute 13-miles. Trail run 4 miles. Calf "cramping" again. Tu: Weather sucked. Walk dog 1.5 miles. W: Weather sucked. Nada. Th: Low back tightened up. Bike commute 4 miles in morning, 22 miles in evening. After some gentle stretching in the evening, back felt better. F: Back still a bit tight. Couldn't ride bike due to chores that required vehicle. I was a slug after work. Nada. Rundown/tired. Sa: Back and hamstrings a bit tight. Constant light movement... clean/rearrange garage. Stretched during movements. Very rundown/tired. Su: Very rundown/tired. Traveled to wife's folks to pick up generator, snowblower, and some furniture. Did some paperwork. Felt better upon arriving home in the evening. Contemplated doing a workout, but I ate 1,000 calories of crap instead.

My wife, who does XFit 5 days a week and sometimes 2X a day, as well as 3X a week lunch workout and I use K supplements when cramps get really bad or as a booster. We also drink Coco Water and IV. On the trail we use IV, cocowater (Big Tree Farms), and NUUN.

Re: Cramps, I know it sounds weird, but dill pickle juice works the best for me (I usually have to make 12am runs to the refrigerator). During heavy workouts, I make sure I take Salt Stick before, every 45 minutes during, and after a workout. That said, the Salt Stick is good for the type of diet I follow and may not be for everyone. I can't drink or use sugary nutrition.

I put "cramps" in quotes because they aren't traditional cramps. More of a deep dull pain, or a knot... like someone kicked me right in the center of the meaty part of my calf. Almost more like a stress fracture, except nothing except trail running bothers it... and even the first couple of miles on the trails are fine. Traditional stretches don't work. My yoga-practicing co-worker suggested a stretch (sitting with elevated leg and pull with a strap) and it does a fair job of getting to the muscle.
That said, the cramp coupled with my excessive sweating the past couple of weeks and my general malaise got me thinking my electrolytes might be out of whack. So I've started eating high-electrolyte foods like V8, potatoes, and greens. I've also noticed I'm craving dairy, which is a bit strange because dairy and I aren't the best of friends. Maybe I should eat some Tums as a supplement.
Praise be, the humidity is back down to normal today. I actually feel like running today (instead of forcing myself to run).

Here I am. I should be on Week 4 of my Half Marathon training schedule. It's not going so well, and has been spotty, to say the least. I'm hoping yesterday morning was my turn around point. I managed a 3.1 mile run. This morning I ran 1.5 miles on the treadmill (trying to work on speed). I have Yoga tonight, so hopefully I'll stay this trend. My long run this weekend is supposed to be 7 miles. hahaha I haven't ran 7 miles since May. Fingers crossed I don't injure myself.
