I got tired of the packed gym. No free lockers, having to sign up and see if you get a place in the class, waiting for machines etc. I have started working out with YouTube videos and invested in a cheap set of weights. So far, I'm not missing the gym. I did worry about motivation if I didn't have somewhere to be to workout but a year later, I'm still going strong!

@idahowalker I have twice gotten good advice from fellow swimmers, which has done a lot to improve my technique. I'm grateful for it, since I am mostly self-taught in the pool. My husband keeps an eye on my running form (when I am running at all), because I have a tendency to significant asymetries that can really mess with things. I'm glad the young woman was open to your input and that it helped her--might actually save her from having to give up running somewhere down the line.

Another repeat: The locker room is an LNT zone. If you shit your underwear, please don't leave them on the floor in front of the lockers (or hanging from the towel hook by the showers).

It's been a quiet year on the whole. This crop of newbies (and most of the regulars) are mostly well-mannered and focused on their workouts. There are a two creepy old guys (my age or older) who spend way too much time bothering women 30-35 years too young for them, and one big, dumb juicer who drops barbells from waist height and glares at anyone who appears to notice. I had the misfortune of overhearing the old guys later in the locker room enthusing about how they had almost just scored. It looked to me as if their targets politely endured the onslaught while quietly hoping they would shut up and go away, if not drop dead on the spot. It's the only about the third time in five years I've seen such overstepping of bounds.

Not a rant, but rather an observation:
A couple weeks ago a 40-something lady had a 20-minute conversation on her phone while performing her workout. She didn't miss a beat on either. I was strangely impressed.

There's a new guy in the gym. Tells everyone he was the Strength & Conditioning coach at SU. If true (and I have plenty of reservations), that explains a lot about the state of SU football. First, he's a socializer. Last week, I did my entire legs workout in the time he did one SET. Yesterday, I did my entire back/bis workout in the time he did 4 sets of bench press. But the most annoying thing he does... he has large chains that he hangs off the barbells when he does squats and bench presses*. The clanging has to register 110db... it almost hurts.
As a favor, if you hear of a strange workout-related strangulation death in the Syracuse area, you didn't hear nuthin here... OK?
*Part of me thinks this is a way to reduce weight in the bottom of the movement. The other part of me thinks he's just an ass that does it for attention.

There are a couple guys in my gym who use chains. Most of them are so quiet and inconspicuous that I'm only aware of the chains when they're being packed into gym bags. The one exception is the big juicer I mentioned a few posts back, who sounds like the ghost of Jacob Marley. I keep wanting to ask if those are the chains he forged in life, but I don't think he would be amused.

Ask him how far he can swim, carrying those chains?

Quite a few well-mannered months have passed, but the return of the Philistines is upon us.
Is there any sensible reason to do your curls in the middle of the stairway, blocking access to 1/3 of the gym? There are countless other places to stand, and very few of them expose you to the risk of being shoved down the stairs for glaring at everybody who is waiting to use the thoroughfare.

During the summer is about the only time I'm in the gym with the younger set, since they are in school mid-day when I go. But I've certainly had the pleasure of watching a number of guys admiring themselves in the mirror lately. One yesterday was doing the Charles Atlas flex. I wanted to ask if he could really do that without irony.
Normally, the worst I deal with is the woman who insists on using the hair dryers to dry her shower shoes.

There actually is good science behind chains. For some exercises. Depends upon the force/contraction curve for each muscle, keeps the muscle loading constant through the movement.

The BSU gym during the summer was an empty place. The one thing I did enjoy was hardly any males went to the gym during the summer. Now that school has started I have been mused by the usual antics. My most favorite antic is people using the weight machines without making any adjustments. Many times finding the weight the machine was set at to be too heavy and the user moves on. OK, I admit, I have moved the weight pin, a time or two, to the highest weight stack. It seems that the newbs do not have the concept of wiping down the equipment after use and what’s up with setting the tread to WFO and than walking off to talk to a friend? I do enjoy their chagrin when the treadmill stops cause the machine detects no one aboard.
Oi! I really dig that the BSU gym has treadmills that have minus degrees.
Anyways, by demonstration, I have been able to show the newbs how o lower the sunshades and turn on the fans. I get many thanks when I lower the shades as a line of newbs squint into the sunward facing window or when I energize the ceiling fans.
This year has been the year of strew ones gear all over the place. The gym has decided that all the locker inside of the main locker room are rented lockers. The gym has made all the lockers I the hallways the free lockers. This seems to be a policy that has not sunk into the young minds. So instead of changing in the main locker room and putting their stuff into the free lockers, bring your own lock, the gym users are laying their gear on the floor near where they work out and 100’s of lockers go unused.
Good times
