Typically, I use the Cablecross machine that has Imperial weights. On Sunday, I had to use the Cablecross wih the metric weights, good thing I got the weights listed on my workout sheet in both units. A young woman, set up the Imperial Cablecross machine and then just stood there, the entire time I worked out, messing with her phone.

I must say (if I haven't already) that women seem to commit a disproportionately small fraction of gym etiquette crimes. Mrs. big_load says that's because that extra leg of the X-chromosome hosts vital stupidity control genes.

Or, she could just say that Testosterone is a dangerous drug. The extra leg it brings with it is host to plenty of stupid decision genes.

I find male gym crimes tend to be more from over-aggression while those of the the females more from over-whining,though there are ,certainly, exceptions to each rule.
To guard against the later my training and diet is anabolic to maximize production of growth hormone, testosterone, and other growth factors, while at the same time anti-catabolic to avoid over-production of cortosol and estrogen.
Otherwise,I find I am wasting my,and others, time in the gym unless I am there for the aerobics machines, and I am not as I strongly prefer aerobics training outside...

Tangent - the REI etiquette rant thread.
Don't stand in front of the socks, fondling one of the socks with your right hand for several minutes which staring intently at the phone in your left for the same amount of time. Some of us actually want to buy socks.
It was bizarre.

Here's another one: quit "calibrating" the scale with your own body as the reference mass! I know the scale is inaccurate, but it would be great if it were inaccurate in the same way every day. It's time to resurrect this for busy season. The scale is there to tell you how much you weigh, not for you to tell it how much you think you weigh. If you don't like the answer, buy your own scale and leave the gym scale alone. This seems to be a battle between wishful-thinking weight reducers who want it to read five pounds light and wishful-thinking body builders who want it to read five pounds heavy.

There's a balance-beam scale in our locker room. I think it's harder to mess with those. I don't know--I weigh myself at home, in the mornings so it's consistent. At the gym I only seem to think of it when dressing after a swim. I'm not weighing all that wet hair. No way!

I find body weight another useless statistic, similar to obsessing about miles hiked or miles left to hike.It just makes the time go by slower, excuses easier to make, and thus the goal more difficult to achieve...

There was a guy at one of the squat racks today. He was actually doing squats. I almost went over and smacked him. What was he thinking?

I find body weight another useless statistic I am finding that it's a good way to keep weight gain (i.e. the acquisition of fat) reined in. Weighing in once a week marks trends faster than waiting for my pants to get too tight, and I want to stay on top of it. Since it's all about trends, it only makes sense to use my own scale, which may not be accurate, but I hope is at least somewhat consistent.

I find body weight another useless statistic ... When I weigh myself at the gym, it's mainly a rough check my hydration level (compared to my morning reference). It's one of the things I look at when my cardio results are off. Sleep and stress are the other big contributors.

I don't really care one way or the other. If it helps you fine with me.
My issue is more that the whining and complaining on this thread is a motivational killer.I guess I should just avoid this thread similar to the nutritional one I started that turned into a whine fest...

Me, I find this thread to be fun, light, and not aimed at any one or group in particular.
One of the early morning things my wife and I like to do is watch the YouTube videos of gym fails. I hope there is not some person with a video recorder snuck around the corner recording me. OK so maybe that's why I watch those videos to see if I am on one of them.
I had the chance to help some resolutionist set up a few exercises machines when I went to the gym on Tue. I did a track run and I could see their longing to be able to run like I did. Funny thing is that I had a terrible run coming off of being ill.
I enjoy helping gym newbie’s with equipment set up and operations and I like to offer words of encouragement to those who have made more than one attempt at stopping by the gym. I may be the fat looking old gray haired guy but when I am working out I am going hard. When another fat old person starts to work out at the gym I know it can be intimidating.
In a birds of a feather flock together sort of way a new to the gym older person will tend to be more comfortable working out near me and even ask to share the Cablecross machine. It becomes obvious they don’t' know what they are doing, especially when they try to do what I just did at the weight setting I just used. For me it is proper gym etiquette to step in and show the newbie form and function. Heck, not many newbies to the gym even know the name of the Cablecross machine. As I help a newbie out I am asked good questions. Questions like how did I learn how to use the machine and I explain it to them. On my clip-board I use to record my workout, I have extra paper so I can write things down for the newbie. I think it is important to let a newbie know that I been working at this for years and it does hurt and it is hard.
I really like seeing the newbie, at a later time, with a clip-board, a list of exercise routines attached and they are working out on some machine. I am offered a few words of thanks as I go on my way to do my own thing.
My wife got me into the gym in hope that working out would help me live a better and longer life. My motivation started out as wanting to better be able to backpack. Working out has indeed helped with improving my quality of life and when I can I like to pass it on.
This thread has been about fun.

I gave some thought to how I’d feel if someone, at the gym, approached me to say you are doing that wrong; as, I worked out, I would imagine words being said to me and how’d I’d react. Yes, I know not ‘everyone’ is me and not ‘everyone’ would react as I would but it was a good starting point. I’d then go out and give my ideas on proper approach a try.
Not long ago, I was running on the track when a girl passed me. I saw that her left leg did a funny little twist and figured on how she could improve her enjoyment of running. By happenstance, at the end of her run, my run was over and I was in the walk cool down phase, I passed by her. I said excuse me, the look on her face said I don’t want to be bothered by the fat old man so I knew the next words out of my mouth were critical to gaining her attention. I said that I bet her left leg hurts right now and you are going to go foam roller it. Her eyes widened, she stopped, and took her other ear bud out to listen as I explained how she could run a bit more pain free. I’ve been ill and missed about a week of running. I recently encountered the young woman, she told me thanks. She explained how she has been running and giving thought to what I told her as she ran and her running pain in her left leg is about gone. She, also, asked if, when I saw her run again, I could comment on her running.
