According to Strava, I've climbed the Alpe D'Huez in 1:01:40. And I don't even remember going to France.

It's great to see this thread still going. I need to get my bike out and ride it more.
I have a question, what is everyone using now to track/record their rides? Old fashioned bike computers? Smartdevices? I had an old GPS device I had for hiking and that doubled as my bike computer. Trying to find out what's out there nowadays.

I use a Garmin Forerunner 235 and am planning to upgrade to a Forerunner 935 (for tri purposes).
Strava is linked to my Garmin and I also run Map My Run on my phone (as I have a few friends in that app).

I have a cheap bike computer attached to my handlebars for real-time data.
I carry my cell phone in a saddle pack. When I want to keep a record of my ride, I'll turn on the Strava app.

I've bike-commuted to work for a 3+ years now, using the same route. This year I noticed cars weren't giving me the same breadth when passing. The reason finally dawned on me. The County installed rumble strips in the dividing line. Drivers don't want to go over the strips.

I've bike-commuted to work for a 3+ years now, using the same route. This year I noticed cars weren't giving me the same breadth when passing. The reason finally dawned on me. The County installed rumble strips in the dividing line. Drivers don't want to go over the strips. Colorado created a law to give bicyclists room. "When passing a bicyclist, allow at least three feet of space between the widest point of your vehicle and the widest point of the cyclist (this is a law in Colorado). To pass a cyclist safely, you may cross a double yellow center line when oncoming traffic is clear."www.bicyclecolorado.org/ride-colorado/rules-of-the-road/I absolutely hate road riding these days because every person has a cell phone with them. Distracted driving has become a huge issue. I met a lady this past Wednesday who was training for Boulder Ironman. On May 8th, she was hit by a pickup truck (she missed the Boulder Ironman due to her injuries). She suffered multiple fractures and a punctured lung. While she bounced back from those injuries, the doctor said had she not been so fit, her recovery period would have been much longer. She has since been invited to the Ironman Kona World Championships by Women For Tri (usually only entries allowed by qualification) and has picked up her training for that. She did her first road ride since the accident last week in Left Hand Canyon.

I absolutely hate road riding these days Given the demographics, you wouldn't think drivers here would be courteous to cyclists. But I gotta admit that, overall, they are. Also, nearly all the roads I take either have a slow speed limit, wide shoulder, and/or little traffic. Sometimes that means going a bit out of my way. There are certain roads I refuse to take. And my rearview mirror is invaluable. In all the riding I've done this year, only one person has unnecessarily* encroached into my "safe space". And that was MY FATHER!!!! He swears he wasn't on his phone but he was definitely distracted. The conversation went something like this: Me: Hey dad, were you driving on Kirkville Road near I-481 this morning? Dad: Yes, how did you know? Me: Because you were driving on the shoulder while I was riding my bike there!!!! I called you a few explicates before I realized it was your car. He had no clue there was a cyclist on the shoulder, much less that it was me. * I understand when they can't move over more due to oncoming traffic. I've also noticed while running or walking my dog on neighborhood roads, that elderly people seem to have apprehension about crossing over the yellow line. I am quick to point at them to have them move over.

walkswithblackflies - :-O That's crazy that the one person who encroached in your lane was your Dad! lol At least you were able to give him a peace of your mind, unlike other anonymous individuals.

At least you were able to give him a peace of your mind, unlike other anonymous individuals Last year he hit a deer straight-on during the daytime... says he didn't see it. I raised the question if he was distracted, but he said he wasn't. After my "close call" with him, I told him that I believed he was distracted both times... and that he'd better start paying attention. And if he indeed wasn't distracted, that he had to consider giving up driving. We shall see.

what is everyone using now to track/record their rides? Old fashioned bike computers? I use an old-fashioned computer. That gives me time and distance. I usually map routes for longer rides onto ridewithgps.com, to get elevations. But I don't make my rides public, even though it would probably be more generous to do so (I do sometimes find good rides by stumbling on the routes others have shared). I don't want anything to do with the comparisons and competitions that seem to arise from some of the web sites.

I understand when they can't move over more due to oncoming traffic. Yeah, well, according to both the law and basic humanity, they should wait until it is safe to do so. "I had to hit the biker, officer. There was oncoming traffic so I couldn't go around him."

Yeah, well, according to both the law and basic humanity, they should wait until it is safe to do so. "I had to hit the biker, officer. There was oncoming traffic so I couldn't go around him." I should clarify... my personal "safe space" is larger than than the distance required by law. When cars appear to enter this space, I start intently staring at my rear view mirror. I'm blessed with 3-8' shoulders on most of my roads. So even when my father crossed the shoulder line, he was technically still over 3' from me. That said, a semi cab almost hit me the other day. I was wearing neon blue, and riding near the shoulder line (so I should have been even more visible), and this cab pulled out of a freight warehouse driveway without even looking. I screamed "HEY!!! HEY!!!!" and swerved into the traffic lane (thankfully no cars). He jumped a little when he heard me, but didn't actually see me until I was directly in front of the cab. When we made eye contact he looked terrified. Good. Hopefully he learned a lesson.

You cannot outride that thunderstorm I've been caught in many a monsoon storm. One was so strong that I couldn't pedal forward even in the lowest gear. It was a micro-burst. I had to stop and hang onto the bus stop. It was an experience. And it was 1130 at night. Every monsoon season (July through September) I put fenders on the bike. They attach in 10 minutes.
