Not all hike/ski clothing is appropriate for cycling.
Don't just grab any parka out of the closet for the bike commute to the gym! I was rushed and did not want to go the ride basket and pull the appropriate swag out, so I grabbed my Patagucci mountain ski monster out. It is super long and full to pull over midlayers. And almost water proof for this mornings showers.
First full foot down stop in traffic, I tried to raise up on pedal pushing off, the back skirt of the longish parka caught on my seat and I about tumbled. I had to scoot the butt back in an arc to keep from catching every time. Of course I forgot or denied the problem twice more.. There are three four way stops to and from on my route to the gym and I am a local community biking advocate and don't need a run-the-stop ticket. Test that swag before you hang yourself. That first hang was really wedged in and had witnesses.

rangewalker - Something similar happened to me earlier this year. I was wearing loose shorts. I came to a red light at a busy intersection and stopped. Light turned green, I pushed off, went to stand on my peddles, and the back of my shorts caught on my empty water bottle holder. Over I tumbled, in the middle of the intersection, in full view of about 100 people. At least my shorts didn't get pulled down! LOL!

Something similar happened to me earlier this year. I was wearing loose shorts. I came to a red light at a busy intersection and stopped. On a different venue, Deborah reminded me, "now you could understand the issue with dresses is", on bikes. And yep, I have had some near misses with rain pants pulled over bike shorts. My seat was a Selle Anatomica leather with unturned edges that can be really grabby....but god it is comfortable.

Tales from the morning commute: I found out this morning my "I am about to be broadsided in a four -way stop by a big pickup voice" is actually quite PC but startling. I hit a four-way this morning, dropped a leg, stopped, and entered the intersection, but the PU to my right was only looking ahead. I had the ROW as he was pulling to stop as I climbed my pedal. He started rolling in, I yelled, "hey, Hey, HEY!". He slammed his brakes and yelled, "what hey?" Then made eye contact with and he said, "good morning, wow, sorry". I am such a dink, I waved at him, sheesh. I have not yelled that loud or deep since I left the oilfield. And never that PC. Like I forgot every expletive I ever learned with the boys. I have in been in NGO's too long now. Probably everyone on this forum has had much worse and more but in my little wild west city, bikes and pedestrians do not exist.

Just did my first ride today since December 19th. Five miles to meet some friends for a few beers. It's easier to get out of the routine than it is to get back in.

Nice bike Reuben!
Now just saw this thread, I have been biking for years. Biking is Great! I personally do not own a vehicle or even drive. But for years have walked, hiked, biked, or public transportation wherever I go. Many a summer have lived deep in the Wyoming Wilderness. Now am retired at age 65. And now days everyday it is hiking, biking, and birding. My bike is an old Mountain Bike with full suspension, a Haro Extreme, which I bought in the year 2000. It still runs excellent. Last fall biked from Jackson Hole Wyoming where have lived for years south. And now have been wintering here in Southern Utah in St. George. Soon it will be time to bike back north come spring, back to Wyoming or maybe even up to Alaska. There is a whole world out there with still so much to see and experience. Now will say this ... go green and live on your bike and hike in my opinion. Life is Great!

First ride of the year yesterday. Unfortunately, it's because I had to bring my Durango to the mechanic (overheating).

Well, it finally happened. I've had minor falls before (typically when I forget to unclip at a stop sign), but yesterday I had my first HARD fall. I was going (to the right) around a corner at a good speed and my tires must have hit an oil slick and just went out from beneath me (pavement was wet). Best I can figure is I did a "split" when I put my right foot down then flipped over on my back, knocking the wind out of me. I was down for a couple of minutes. A few bystanders came to check if I was OK. A few more minutes later and I rode the 6 miles back home (now in the rain, to add insult to injury) at a much slower pace. I think that actually helped with some of the soft tissue damage.
At the time, the worst injury was the soft tissue of my right hip and thigh. Although that area still has a bit of a "jello" feel to it, the worst pain now is my bruised heel. It really doesn't hurt just sitting here, but it is quite sore when walking. Right knee bones got bruised too. Left shoulder a bit sore. But nothing broken and tendons feel OK. Head/neck feel fine (the very tip of the back of my helmet lightly hit the curb or pavement). So all in all, I'm feeling somewhere between Frankenstein and The Revenant.
