I define it as taking risk, trying to better one's self, and living an honest life. I'm not sure what it means yet but I will let you know when I'm done with it.

I think only you can define what an authentic life is for you.
and yes, I realize that that's more of an observation than an answer

How do you define an authentic life? *My* definition would be to live your life toward the goals and according to the values you've set for yourself. I don't consider it my place to judge other people's goals, so would not presume to judge their lives.

I think it would be the opposite of an inauthentic life, but how do you define that? I think you've created a conundrum.
Actually, I think Shakespeare described it perfectly and simply through Polonius' advice to Laertes: "To thine own self be true."

Silly little Ranger, authenticity is subjective.

I suppose there is a philosophically correct answer, but no one would accept it.
Here is the closest I think one can come to it in a secular world.

The spiritual answer would take us in a different direction. This would be the Two Roads Diverged in Yellow woods scenario.
Good question.

I don't. I can't. Once I define my life, it's no longer authentic.

Only you can define what that means. What works for one person won't work for another. It's like defining happiness. Only you can measure that.

The question doesn't make sense to me.

The question doesn't make sense to me. "Authenticity" has lately become a hot topic with the younger folks. I like that people are thinking about how their lives should be lived, although I hesitate to define this metric or to guide my behavior by how others define it. I live as I choose under my particular circumstances. It's authentic enough for me. I suspect most of us have similar feelings.

Live a life that makes you happy, but not at the expense of anyone else.

Live a life that makes you happy, but not at the expense of anyone else. I agree to a point. But somewhere along the line, I believe you have to go a little further. We all have, I think, a responsibility to make the world a better place, be it helping the homeless, tutoring in a school, working to improve the environment or whatever. If you haven't helped others, then in MHO, you haven't lived any kind of authentic life.

hikerjer , your concept is admirable and worthy of a high level of respect. Unfortunately, though, I think there are a lot of people interested only in their own welfare. I don't think that makes them inauthentic, just self absorbed. The world would be so much better for humanity and wildlife it everyone shared your generous and thoughtful outlook on life.

I'd say living doing what one wants to do, without hurting others (i.e. murder, fraud, etc..) ... but not necessarily friction-less. It's probably become a marketing slogan and point of contention.
