Well, this thread certainly separates out the bureaucrats from the individualists. My own philosophy is to live life and let others define it.

who cares as long as it is good. Ah, but now we're right back to the question of what is "good". And that seems to be the underlying point behind Dave's discussion: how do we define "good," if that is indeed part of the meaning of "authentic."

I think all humans at birth are wired to do "good". We don't need a Golden Rule or a list of laws to make us moral. Religion is not the source of "goodness" and morality. It is culture that creates the definition and, ultimately, what is a "bad" person. And, not all cultures define it the same way.

But if we are all born good (and, aside maybe from some bad brain chemistry, I think you're right), something can and does happen. I guess murder and hateful behavior are okay in some cultures (usually acceptable around religious questions), but in our culture, we tend to consider those bad. And, to play the devil's advocate, I'd say that at least to some degree those things spring from our culture's religious heritage.

Do you have to do "good" as defined by others in order to be authentic?

Do you have to do "good" as defined by others in order to be authentic? Not at all haha. See my post above. That is a prime reason many philosophers have dismissed it if considered independently as being a worthwhile aim or goal. David

If only we could free ourselves from pod people's control and see the world as it really is! I'm suddenly wracked with doubt over the existence of free will. They wanted me to pinch myself.

I don't necessarily agree that we are all born to be good. I think that we are all born wanting to survive. Sometimes this involves being selfish, which may or may not be "good".
As far as what I think an authentic life is, I think it's being true to yourself. HYOH. But I strongly advocate living simply. Spend less, save more. Spend less time watching TV and more time reading or spending time with your family/friends/community or donating your time to good causes. I think there is too much noise and distraction in today's society. Too much advertisement, too many commercials, too much trying to keep up with the Jones'. Too many material things people want at the expense of the things money can't buy. One of my favorite memes is showing a line of folks outside Best Buy coveting the latest gadget on Black Friday and it says something like, "If we only spent as much time in election lines..." Elections and democracy, reading, writing, hiking, making art, making love... So much more important than the latest phone!

It's not that complicated!
Just say "No" to The Man.
Now we just need to figure out who The Man is.

One thing I know for sure, those that have an "authentic life" most likely aren't aware of it and have likely never contemplated the idea...

Authenticity is a word some folks use to stroke their own ego and preen on about what a special snowflake they are compared to everyone else.

I don't know the answer, or maybe even the question.
But recently I went to visit an old friend I hadn't seen for too many years, who just had his fifth brain tumor surgery and now his third cancer treatment (radiation + chemo)
I thought about all the time since my last visit with him; much of which I spent with a-holes instead of with him & other non-a-holes, all in service of my "career". All the time I spent tolerating corporate BS or even participating in it.
Maybe its just a life lesson that smarter people learn faster than I have...but "authentic" was a word that crossed my mind. As in: the quality of people I'll devote the rest of my remaining time to.
