rebeccad...we camped over there our first trip to Thousand Island Lake...in 1980 In 2008, we came in on the old John Muir Trail but, alas, others had discovered the former quieter location

Note how we were insulating the tents. It was a hot afternoon!

rebeccad, I really like the photo with Banner in it - there's such a dramatic change in the rock formations across the lake...softer and more smooth on the lower ones and still sharp and pointed in the upper areas. hikerchick395 , I see the same thing in the photos of the rocky formations in your last photo - what a contrast!

I really like the photo with Banner in it - there's such a dramatic change in the rock formations across the lake...softer and more smooth on the lower ones and still sharp and pointed in the upper areas. Fast transitions in that area between granite and volcanic rocks. I got VERY tired of climbing over the volcanic stuff, which is blocky and broken (in contrast to the granite, which is slabby and smooth, as you note).

All you guys posting pics from hiking the what I call the "real" mountains as I've never had chance yet, make me wonder if you actually find a smooth place to camp (ie.. no rocks). You have tents surrounded by rocks which makes me believe that you probably found the smoothest place to camp but still have to put up with sleeping on smaller stones. I'm jealous of the scenery and the location but not the bed.

Coolkat the campsite was flat and sandy just big enough for our tent. A few other sandy campsites were close by but we like this one against the rock
