Great slabs of mostly smooth rock make an excellent tent site. Even granite with its little bumps makes a decent tent site, if the pad you sleep on is thick enough. On my own trips to the places pictured here, I have found it relatively easy to find a good spot for a night.

What do you guys think of this picture? Angels LandingNobody actually slept in the tent, the photographer only used it as a prop.

I don't like the staging. I think the pic would've been better without the tent, showing the Milky Way over Angel's Landing.

All you guys posting pics from hiking the what I call the "real" mountains as I've never had chance yet, make me wonder if you actually find a smooth place to camp (ie.. no rocks). You have tents surrounded by rocks which makes me believe that you probably found the smoothest place to camp but still have to put up with sleeping on smaller stones. I'm jealous of the scenery and the location but not the bed. We can usually find a place that someone else has cleared, down to the little stuff you don't notice under a sleeping pad. Or, as Zeke says, a flat slab if nothing else. I'm pretty sure that the only sleepable places in spots like our camp up by Catherine Lake at the base of Banner Peak are those that someone has created with a fair amount of hard work, though sometimes there are natural little gravel patches.

Three days ago along the Arizona Trail north of Flagstaff. I like the almost rainbow effect of the illuminated tent bits framing that one.
