Nothing against Billings, but I think Outdoor Magazine has a goofy way of narrowing down their choices.

The results reflect the opinion of the readers of Outside Magazine who knew about the poll and participated. That is a very narrow demographic. It appears to represent where those readers live rather than the characteristics of a particular town. After all, how can I vote for Jim Thorpe, PA when I know nothing about it? I'd vote for Tucson because it's where I live.
I wouldn't give the conclusion much merit.

The initial list is goofy. 90% are not towns, they are cities.

The whole thing is a farce. While I really enjoy living in Billings, calling it the best town in America is a bit of a stretch. And Jackson, maybe the best town to live in if you're a millionaire. For us members of the proletariat, I don't think so. The whole idea of the "best" town is ridiculous, especially, when you select it in the way Outside Magazine does. But hey, if we win, we'll take it. You can bet the local Chamber of Commerce will be all over it. That'll probably just bring more people in and at 109,000 (140,00 metro area) we're larger than I'd like us to be right now. But we do have a great brew pub scene. Six breweries downtown all within walking distance of each other. If that doesn't make a city great, I don't know what does.

The whole thing is a farce. Agreed, and not a very good one at that. Sort of humorous though, complete with voter fraud. I didn't read how they established seeding for the "tournament", but the fact they have brackets and seeding gave me a chuckle. One more reason to read that rag only when I'm waiting to see my doctor.

Well it has been raining off and on pretty well here in Jackson. It's Elk Fest, I'm working the Chili Cook-off tomorrow. I'm quite far from a Millionaire Jer. Some less than affluent folks make it work here, but your point is of course spot on.
I'm pretty sure we've got at least a few votes here for Cheyenne Wells.

Jackson - a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.
Billings - a nice to place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit there (for very long anyway).

It is rather ironic, the best places for outdoor activities are the ones few people know about (IMHO)

Best Towns is a marketing strategy to increase circulation on which advertisement pricing is based. Jackson is an interesting pick, especially if your favorite summer activities include being stuck in traffic with drivers unfamiliar with the area.

Billings at 109,000 (140,00 metro area) we're larger than I'd like us to be right now And Billings is the largest city in MT and the largest urban area within 500 miles. Now think about that.... and stay home.... :(

Now think about that.... and stay home.... Hey, brace yourself LW, we locals will all be moving to the Gallatin. It'll just be too crowded here once the rest of the country finds out we're the best city in the United States.
