Jer, my Mom and Dad lived in Billings in the 1950's. I can guarantee you they'd feel the same visiting there today as you do Bozeman today. I'll find out, my Mom is coming in two weeks and I'm going to take her to Billings to see her grandaughter who is in the MSU nursing program there. It will be the first time she's been there since 1956.
Course my dad was in Bozeman for the first time in 1949... I'll bet he would have thought "your" Bozeman of the 70's was radically different! But he loves the Bozeman I live in, even at age 87.
Life marches on, nothing remains the same... but our memories remain.

Jer, I'm looking forward to meeting you and throwing back a beer! When I'm in Billings on my own and have some time, I'll contact you. Ditto when you're in Bozeman. Contact me and I'll meet you for dinner or whatever. I'm really looking forward to it!
Yeah, Billings in the 50's. My dad got out of the Air Force in 1953 and went back to driving a sight-seeing bus in YNP. He gave flying lessons on the side out of Cody until he caught the attention of Mary Lynch from Billings. Apparently, they'd had a pilot crash on a mountain and die, and needed a new pilot. She'd heard about dad, and approached him about a job. He was hired on and flew for Lynch's Flying Service in Billings until he got hired on by an airline in 1956.
Dad, like me, is a jazz nut and saw Louis Armstrong in Billings at that period, around 1954. Man, I would loved to have been there!

I've been known to drink beer with total strangers at a gas station with no gas on a Sunday morning in Clarksdale, MS. Good times.

Right you are. Doesn't get any better than that. I'm not making that up. And that was just the beginning. It was a great day. They don't all have to be about mountains, trails, marmots, streams, bears, and blisters.
