In the home I grew up in (1959-77) the phone # was GLobe-8-7996.
I remember it better than any number I've had since, including my current cell phone.

I got all of them except #4, could not place that. I still have several of those items, especially that exact crock pot! We are not old, we are wise

My grandparents were NEptune-4-6196. At home we were TE-4-3049.
I also know my student ID number from college. Why can't I remember why I came into the kitchen?

I vividly remember my parents teaching me the phone number. I must have been four, but I could recite name (and parents' names), address, and phone number like a prisoner of war.

Oh Rolodex, Where art thou?
Yesterday was a realization of change. Have been retired for 6½ years. Prepping the house for re-piping the plumbing system. Part of the prep includes providing access for the plumbers. Thus re-organizing, boxing, labeling and discarding accumulated stuff. Lots of memories on and off trail and employment career. Included in the stuff review were three (3) Rolodex Business Card files. Two (2) of which reflect the last 20 years of my employment.
As I reviewed and discarded them I came to realize how inconsequential and out of the loop I was in my former industry. I guess it was the final transition to feeling irrelevant in the industry you loved. A bit of a melancholy day.

As a kid, we just had 5-digit dialing. No name—there were 7 numbers, we just didn’t have to use the others as long as we were calling another Island number. I don’t know if I learned our phone number from our AZ home, which we left shortly after I turned 7. Phones weren’t for little kids to use, and we lived in a small enough town that everyone knew the preacher’s kids.

I still remember effortlessly my phone number as a kid, my best friend's number, and my Dad's work number (CR8-4978; LO3-6090; PA2-3500.) Nowadays I don't remember even my own kids' phone numbers, and I couldn't tell you their (or anyone's) mailing addresses either, snail mail being used so seldom anymore.

Probably the 2 weirdest numbers I remember as a kid (in the mid-60's) were our phone number at Fort Shafter in Hawaii (86-3505) and my dad's Army serial number before they switched to social security numbers. I had to know that number (RA15445100) to get into the post's swimming pool.

This is something I’ve thought about on occasions when I’ve forgotten my phone, say on a bike ride. If I needed to contact anyone—I know no one’s number by heart. I think I should fix that.

This is something I’ve thought about on occasions when I’ve forgotten my phone, say on a bike ride. If I needed to contact anyone—I know no one’s number by heart. I think I should fix that. I edited the lock-screen photo on my phone to have the text,
"I.C.E <spouse's name and phone number>."
A person could use that information if I were incapacitated, but also, seeing it there helps me remember her phone number. (So far, I have no difficulty remembering her name.)

When Dave was killed, it took police about 2 hours to use various systems and come up with a contact/address for him. And the name they got was our younger son, adding a layer of pain and confusion.
