My daughter and her GF were planning to come (from TX) for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. (We were even going to get to keep their husky in between.) Now TG is off--they're hoping to visit her GF's family if possible and then come here of possible at Christmas. I'm not holding my breath. (Their original plan was to visit both families on a big driving Christmas trip, but clearly that's not responsible--they can't visit 2-3 different subsets of her GF's family and then come here and expose all of our family.)
My son in Chicago was supposed to visit his in-laws for TG and visit us after Christmas. (He is a pastor, so he is never available on actual Christmas). They've canceled their TG trip, and I can see that it's pretty unlikely they'll travel for Christmas, either.
(Our youngest son lives here.)
Really sucks.

We have not traveled for TG or Xmas since we've been together. We have hosted in our home before, but not since moving to Fl. I don't see us changing this year. We'll have a quiet holiday at home, both times.

Normally we would be in AZ to spend Thanksgiving with Mrs. big_load's family. I've cooked there for 18 years in a row, but the streak will end. I would have visited my parents at all this year, and for sure would have gone for Christmas, but not this year.

If the night time temps do not go below zero Thanksgiving weekend, I am going backpacking for a three day trip out in the sagebrush. My post-Covid conditioning is coming along, and it is going to be a few hours in, then day hikes out from a two-night camp. I call it post and wheel. If there is decent water or snow to melt, I may make it three nights. My partner is having one of her children up from Denver so I am going to my distance.
When growing up in Southern Arizona, Thanksgiving weekend for my family, was often a car camping trip into the desert, starting on the Friday after. We kept it up until Easter about once a month.
My step-daughter and her tribe who just returned to Wyoming after their Phoenix business failed divorced this old Bolshi over social issues. (this is 2020). And this week I found out they are all down with Covid, pending tests Monday. Before 2017, I would make dinner with them when they were in the area. My daughter, who is doing a year of college from her mother's basement, maybe infected from contact with her sister. If bad, that will affect my plans for hiking above. All of my local friends are hunkering down.

Yeah. No plans for me. Would like to visit my family in DFW; not gonna happen. My sister here in Little Rock is having a big family get together for both holidays (approx. 25 people with kids and grand kids); I'll pass.
Saw on the news today that one in 378 people have tested positive. Not worth the risk to them or me.
Corvid sure has messed up our lives.

We decided to not go to our son's house at the Grand Canyon this year. We've gone every year for 10 years or so, but not this time. When we called him to tell him, he said that "he'd been thinking the same thing." He also said they'd closed down Mazwik so the only rooms available are on the Rim (he's the ass't rooms director for Xanterra.) So, we'll stay home in the Oklahoma Ozarks. (And what is happening here now, we're in a tornado watch.)

Nope and nope. We usually get together with either my father-in-law and family (some 15 people or so) or with my brother and family (at least six or 8)
Not this year. Just the two of us, hunkering down and keeping our noses clean!
There will be time enough next year. And in the meantime, we may head for the hills and avoid even more people.

This is a real debate in our family. My kids (3 sons, daughter & son-in-law and 4 year old grand daughter) live 2 hours away and my wife has her heart set on them coming down for Thanksgiving. I'm very reluctant for the gathering to occur since my city is exploding with the virus. At least one of my sons feels the same way. Not sure how this going to turnout. It's the pits.

Our family will stay at home this year. No travel. My family can visit us through Zoom instead. With Covid rates as high as they are right now, I can wait a few more months for a vaccine. We have great decorations and will enjoy a good meal and time together and visit virtually.

In Europe the situation is pretty much similar if not identical - during the summer, more or less between the beginning of June and the end of September was possible to travel within most of the European Union area but at the moment many borders between countries within the EU are closed and even within the national perimeter of countries people are not allowed to move between regions unless for specific reasons like job-related. Everybody is just waiting for this unpleasant situation to end and feel free again. Adrian www.HitchhikingTips.com

Last year we backpacked in a complete dinner in freezer bags and heated it up in a stainless kettle on the trusty Whisperlite. We used all my late Mom's recipes and had one of the best meals ever in an Adirondack shelter. That was by choice to celebrate with just the two of us. This year , weather permitting, we will do the same with fat tire bikes with racks. Have tires with studs coming for snow, too. My wife joked to me yesterday, next year we'll jump out of a plane with the bikes to keep one-upping the T-day experience.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, but this year it's pretty low key (since my wife and I still haven't gotten our smell or taste back yet, any sort of a Thanksgiving meal is sort of useless). The good news is our daughter will come over from Billings to spend a few days with my wife and I.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, Agreed. It is the one holiday that is not over commercialized. Easter is a close second.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, Agreed. It is the one holiday that is not over commercialized. Easter is a close second. What’s not to like about a holiday that’s all about eating good food with people you like? I am very torn. My plan all along has been to drive to Seattle to spend TG with my family there. I believe I can do that safely, but it still feel irresponsible. On the other hand, staying here feels pretty painful. I won’t make a decision until the last minute. The way things are going, official shut-downs may make the decision for me.
