FamilySherpa - good luck. Do what you and your wife think is right. Let the rest go.

thanks reuben. I would say we are guilty of taking the easy way out, but any deviation or alternative plan would cause such a massive %$#@-storm that it doesnt seem worth it. Its going to be difficult.

Fortunately, my family is pretty sane, although there have definitely been issues in the past, mostly when my dad was still alive. Taking the easy way out and succumbing to irrational pressures results in only one or two people experiencing all of the stress. In your case, those two people seem to be you and your wife. In my case, it was pretty much everyone except my dad, although that changed a bit over the course of several years, as understanding grew and compromises were reached.
I'm not advocating "sharing" the stress by standing your ground with other family members and creating a blowup, but they'll just keep offloading it onto you every year if you don't put a stop to it, or at least come to some sort of a compromise with the other factions. That's what worked for my family, anyway.
Breaking a precedent can be painful, but that doesn't necessarily make it wrong or bad.
Again, good luck.

Also, I know it's not a contest, but...
For everyone who has parents they will not be able to see over the holidays: Yes, it will be a disappointment for you, but speaking from the other side I can say with a pretty high level of certainty that it will be a bigger disappointment for the parents.

FamilySherpa- I'm going to call it as I see it. Both your parental units, including in-laws must be living in a different world. To me it's time to put on your big boy pants. Anyone that thinks Covid is a hoax and don't take the health of their loved ones and others, as well as themselves seriously has their head in the sand. At a minimum, if you decide to go, consider insisting everyone takes the test and remains in quarantine until the event is over. My father died due to complications of Covid.

This is actually a very good idea...hmmm... my only problem is that my backpack bit the bullet on my hike in september. But I really really really like your idea. You got my wheels turning now.

I'm very sorry to hear of you father's death, johntpenca. Have you seen the stories out of South Dakota? It's absolutely insane. People on their death beds with Covid still insisting that it is all a hoax. The mind simply reels.

Backpacking for awhile would be a good alternative as cases skyrocket..

Thanks for the condolences all. It is up to FamilySherpa to determine what is the correct thing to do. I appreciate his predicament; just feel common sense should prevail over emotion. Edit: Just review this thread for the number of people here compromising their holiday plans in the interest of safety. None of us like it.

I missed my mom's 90th birthday because of Covid and she won't have a 91st birthday. I regret not seeing her then. We saw her, the last time before being hospitalized in August, over the New Year's holiday. Thank goodness for that. She was not the same person the weeks before she passed away.
As for the current situation, we cancelled our trip to Arizona for Thanksgiving. We would be camping, but it would be irresposible to go to the big family gathering like last year.

My wife's daughter, husband Jason, and four children visit our house on a regular basis and were planning to join us for Thanksgiving.
That's all up in the air now after Jason's older brother (age 48) dropped dead a few days ago. His parents thought it was a heart attack and Jason went to the hospital to identify the body and help his parents who own and operate a Korean restaurant. The deceased brother worked there full time. Jason went home after the ordeal to his wife and kids.
Turns out his brother died of COVID, so the whole family is getting tested and will likely have to quarantine.

My sympathies go out to all who've experienced Covid 19, whether in the immediate family, or relatives, friends, or co-workers. As it lingers and devastates, I think it creeps closer to everyone.

Condolences to all who have lost loved ones. We are now over 250,000 who have passed in the US.
