YOWZA I stared down that cliff when I summited Mt St Helens. So hard to imagine someone surviving that fall. I’m guessing that the snow from the falling cornice buffered the fall? It can get very warm up there, with the spring sun reflecting off the snow. He probably took off his jacket while resting on the summit, exactly like I did on the day I climbed…his SOS was probably on the jacket. Heartbreaking. Escaping *down* through the crater from that spot is probably treacherous, with all the crevasses in the crater glacier. I wonder if he looked around for a fumarole to stay warm by…or some volcanology equipment- there’s a ton of it in that crater. Shake a 9.0 “earthquake” in Morse code for SOS? That would’ve drawn some attention. Probably no good options. I’m amazed he nearly made it to the top, climbing back out.
