Understandable they’d call for the pros. That possum hiss is fierce!. And those are big teeth.,. A neighbor in San Diego left out cat food for her cats and possums figured it out. So it was a tad routine to walk out into the courtyard and get hissed at by a possum partway up a tree. It's a long story, but while trying to trap a groundhog that was playing Havoc with my garden I once trapped a possum and put it in a coworker's office early one morning, still in the trap. To shorten the story one hissed, the other screamed, and the former peed on the window ledge. Security escorted the possum outside, passing someone we were interviewing on the way. When I was in middle school, I saw my first possum in a neighbors japanese maple. I went out with the intent to scare it, and watch it play dead. It was at that moment I realized that a possum will attempt to rip your face off before playing dead.

Lots of recent rescues in NY, including this gem: Around three o’clock in the morning on Monday, a 36-year-old man from Connecticut injured his ankle on Mount Tremper, in the Catskills town of Shandaken.
Over the phone, the injured hiker told a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forest ranger that he believed he was “being hunted like in Predator,” a 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger about an extraterrestrial who hunts humans for sport.
Three rangers on a six-wheeler found the hiker in the early morning hours asleep off the trail.www.syracuse.com/outdoors/2023/08/catskills-hiker-injured-while-escaping-predator-is-rescued-by-forest-rangers.html

The drugs must have worn off quickly - just a few hours from being hunted to sleeping in the open.

The drugs must have worn off quickly - just a few hours from being hunted to sleeping in the open. Plenty of time to drive back to town, buy some costumes, and really wake him up

The article should maybe mention that going into a cave is NOT a good idea in a lightning storm. One of the things that scares me about lightning is that if doesn't kill you when you are hit many people have weird aftereffects. One of the things it can do is burn the mycelin sheath off your nerves in places. That never heals and cause odd problems.

THat said, there aren’t a lot of good options if you’ve been paying so little attention that the storm is upon you while you’re on the top of Half Dome. Probably what *really* needs to be said is, pay attention to the weather, and it’s always better to turn back than die.

We were trained to get to a relatively low spot and crouch on insulating material such as our ropes or packs out of direct contact with the ground so we weren’t a ground path for the charge. And. Yes. Paying attention is the start.

“He was never a turning-back sort of kid.” That’s a deadly attitude when you’re in the mountains, especially in January.
