I still am masking when indoors in any public space like the grocery store (metro NYC area). I am nervous about these variants but also since wearing a mask I only got one cold just recently. Normally, with my job and kids in school, I get at least one flu, a stomach bug and several colds through the winter. No matter how things go COVID-wise I may continue the mask thing.
EDIT: I am fully vaccinated by Pfizer

Plus, Ive been told by reliable sources when I have one on, it's the best I've ever looked.

I plan to continue masking until.... I really don't know, but am not taking any chances. I do feel safer, although I recognize that masks have their limitations.
In some ways, it's hard to imagine going w/o a mask, especially in areas with large crowds.

I am vaccinated, and thus don’t feel much anxiety about limited exposure. But I avoid large indoor crowds and still use the hand sanitizer.

The things I’m hearing right now make me feel precautions are still warranted, and while I’m sticking with my sanitizer—helps me not get colds and all too—masks remain the best defense. I’m still masking in stores, and still using the gym only with brief times indoors (the pool is what I go for, and it’s outdoors, so it’s just the locker room. Some days I skip that—just put my bike shorts back on over my wet suit and ride home. You can do that when it’s still over 95 at 6:30 p.m.)

I still wear my mask everywhere. Too many pitfalls.

People here in the SFBA where virus rates are very low, have continued to wear masks indoors that is a wise habit. In contrast, last week along the Eastern Sierra that is dominated by Southern California visitors where there is more political noise, few were wearing masks indoors. As has been the case throughout the pandemic, most of our new state cases continue to be among Southern California and Central Valley youth, young adults, especially among the same ethnic community that shows on below graphs.

Local rates of COVID positive tests since July 1: It's good info, but the chart is kinda misleading (unintentional based on our County's approach to the pandemic). About 60% of the County is fully-vaccinated (76% over 18 years old). So, as there are 1.5x as many vaccinated vs unvaccinated county residents, I calculate that the unvaccinated/other group are 2.45 as likely to test positive than the vaccinated. Conclusion... the vaccine seems to hinder, but not stop transmission. I wish they had a similar stat for hospitalizations, because I think that's where the vaccine is making a difference. ETA... I just emailed the following to our County Health Department: Regarding your COVID Data & Reports webpage. You have a pie chart that shows percent of COVID positive tests (since 7/1) based on vaccination status. As of this morning, the chart showed 38% vaccinated and 45% unvaccinated. There's nothing wrong with the data or presentation, but I don't think that chart is CONVEYING exactly what you want.
Looking at the data presented, it would appear that the vaccine really doesn't affect transmission (38% is close to 45%). HOWEVER, since about 60% of the County is fully-vaccinated (NYS Vaccine Database), that means there are 1.5x as many vaccinated vs unvaccinated residents (i.e. - you're drawing results from a larger pool of people). So, if the vaccine didn't affect transmission, you'd expect 60% of the positive test results to come from vaccinated individuals. That's obviously not the case. In fact, it's nearly inverse.
Based on a 60/40 distribution of vaccinated vs unvaccinated in the general County population, and a 38%/62% distribution of positive test results (45.4+12.4+2.6+1.6=62), I calculate that the unvaccinated/other group are 2.45 times as likely to test positive than the vaccinated. I think this info needs to be conveyed along with the "raw data" in the pie chart.
Also, it would be very helpful to show the vaccinated vs unvaccinated in recent hospitalizations, along with a population-adjusted risk calculation.

Cuomo has already said no masks, no proof of vaccination needed. Schools start the following week. My, how a month changes things ... I'm reading a Washington Post article on my phone that says the Eli Lilly monoclonal antibody treatment is not effective against the delta variant. Yikes!! I honestly don't understand the fuss over masking. Me neither. I went to the grocery store yesterday to get a refilled prescription and stopped by the pet mart for cat food. Hardly anyone was masked anywhere. I made mention of the fact that we are now at (or beyond) Austin's "stage 5" restrictions, there are less than 10 ICU beds in the 11 county area here, and still people refuse to wear a mask. The guy at the next pharmacy window, who was unmasked, got upset and told me to "stop mouthing off about masks" and that "he had the right to not wear a mask". I told him he was a butthole who didn't realize that masks were about protecting others, not yourself, and he was, even if vaccinated, still capable of infecting other people. I strongly suspect that this "freedom fighter" ( BigLoad 's apt term for this group) was not deterred. I'm getting older, and it looks like the "mask freedom fighters" and "vaccine dodgers" are going to keep this thing going for the rest of my life. Sidenote: I hadn't been to a doctor for over a year up to the end of June, except for a brief visit to my new cardiologist last year - I woke with severe back pain at the end of June and went to the emergency clinic when the pain returned a couple of hours later. Turns out I have a kidney stone, and I've been trying to move it through my urinary system for over a month now. No really serious pain, but I feel like I've had a bladder infection for 3 weeks. I've had 2 CT scans of my abdomen, and now I have to be away from a bathroom no longer than 30 minutes. Thank you, "freedom fighters": this is what happens when you just refuse to do what's necessary to take care of a community problem for years. The "background stuff" that normally gets taken care of with regular, normal procedures and doctor visits just ceases to be taken care of anymore. I now hear that there are two more "variants" in the pipeline. Good luck. Another reason to avoid COVID is the loss of smell … or as some who’ve recovered have found, everything smells like something unpleasant so like garlic, like cigarette smoke, … or like poo. I used to be fairly positive, but, lately, I've found myself thinking that those people who died a while back - like my old Air Force buddy who died in May of 2016 - were lucky. I have a lot of stuff I'd still like to do, but I don't have any choice about what I do and don't do anyway now, so maybe death isn't such a big deal. :^)

Cuomo has already said no masks, no proof of vaccination needed. Schools start the following week. My, how a month changes things ... Nothing has changed regarding masking / vaccine proof within New York State, except the mandates in New York City (instituted by the Mayor, not Governor). Even if Cuomo institutes changes now, few are going to follow them due to COVID fatigue, no enforcement, and the fact that he's political toast.

As I wrote a few pages back, the media for politically correct reasons refuses to blame significant numbers of the unvaccinated for their real reason...needle phobia. Instead they let them use excuses they are passing along along on social media as acceptable excuses. Of course some others now that carried the unvaccinated flag are looking for cover. Each day the virus is allowed more victims, the closer the human race moves towards an unstoppable planet wide catastrophe of chaos, death, and destruction.

I have a lot of stuff I'd still like to do, but I don't have any choice about what I do and don't do anyway now, so maybe death isn't such a big deal. :^) I was discussing this issue just the other day with a friend my age. We first discussed fleeing to Canada, but agreed it wasn't an option given their much different medical system. So we're left with how to adapt and survive through this pandemic while idiots are still spreading it. I never thought my "golden years" would be slipping into darker ones. But I do believe that we'll eventually come out of this, minus a lot of those who probably are on their way to hospitals and the cemeteries. Sometimes I wonder if centuries from now some religious group might consider this a devine entity culling of nonbelievers. But, gabby, you need to find a way to stick around and share more of your deep insights. Seriously.

Anyone know if there is any work being done on an mRNA booster that targets delta and possibly lamda? I like that the current mRNA shots likely prevent me going to the hospital or dying but a booster that prevents getting sick and transmitting due to delta+ would be good.

In a county of about 30,000 people we have taken a massive jump from no hospital cases to 16 and from 7 deaths total to 10. And From 7 active cases to about 160. This happened this week, so yesterday the county fair opened, next weekend is a pirate festival at the harbor in the next state but only 27 miles away. Then school starts.
