That's a tough situation, hikerchick. Good luck.

hikerchick395 , I think those like you who have been prevented from seeing their loved ones in facilities are facing such challenges, but I fully support your intention to see your mother! I've read that some facilities bring patients to doors or windows so they can at least see their relatives. While some people are whining b/c of being told to wear masks, I suspect they have no idea how difficult it is for those with relatives in care facilities; being separated from a loved one during a pandemic has got to be one of the most challenging if not frightening situations any person can face. I hope your mother is as well as she can be under the circumstances.

Again, I feel fortunate that I live in a beautiful state with ample hiking options. Also our governor has done a good job, so things are not as bad here as some places. Wearing a mask seems to be my biggest "issue".
I've made all of my masks and find it interesting that I get compliments on them. Who would have thought that "Your mask is pretty," would become a phrase one would hear when taking care of routine errands.
My situation is not bad and I appreciate that. Yet periodically the thoughts of what this is doing to so many others becomes a bit overwhelming. All of the parents trying to work with children at home, the small businesses that will not survive, the unemployed who are close to being evicted from their homes, those with the virus... And the list goes on. I feel all of it. 😞

I didn't go to see my mom on her 90th birthday due to Covid. She went into a hospital two months later. Still didn't travel due to Covid. She went into a skilled nursing home and I was definately not allowed to go there. But she is being moved to a hospice bed next week and, by God, I am going to be there. Should at least be able to see her during the move. I'm sorry. :(

I have to be honest, I'm not loving this thread. I don't want to imply harshness with my first statement. Simply, it bums me out. Best wishes to those dealing with this current mess. Some of these posts are really tough and I hope peace for you.

crawford, I can understand and feel sorry that the thread has affected you this way. I had hoped for a means to express our frustration, to vent, and try to at least create a sense of hope in finding ways to cope with something we've probably never dealt with in our lives. It wasn't my intent to depress anyone or create frustration. But I appreciate your raising the issue and sharing your views, and I hope you too find peace in your hiking activities, especially the training ones. You're extending a lot of yourself to help others learn, and that's admirable.

Everyone being able to unload a bit or share changes (good or bad) was a great idea. It's just heavy, but I guess that's part of the change for today, generally being heavy. The good news for me is I'm getting out on the Black Forest Trail next week...not a training hike, this one is all mine to relax and enjoy! Be well everyone

After bottoming out the past couple weeks at levels that will likely be the lowest achievable until we get a vaccine, our local cases and hospitalizations are starting to rise again. And about 1/3 of new cases have been linked to travel. Grrr.
In the next county over, I'm starting to see blips in rural towns with small colleges. I'll need to keep an eye on that.

I'll be watching the uptick stats for the tri-county area of Michigan for the next few weeks. Despite the popular Woodward Dream Cruise being cancelled, people came anyway. Some were masked; others were not. The one photo of visitors on the sides suggests some of them are fairly close. Attendance last year was 1.5M. I haven't been able to get any estimate on this year's attendance, although I doubt if it even reached 1 million. Still, photos and video clips showed clusters of people. Visitors often come in RVs, and park alongside the highway. Locals come, others come from farther away. When they return, I wonder if they're carrying the virus. www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2020/08/15/unofficial-woodward-dream-cruise-covid-19-birmingham-royal-oak/5589766002/(I like the last photo, of the really old car with the gold trim - what a classic!)

Another thought is the typical American summer vacation is ending and with it, most people's travel to see family... or to simply get out of the house.
It’ll be less about tourists (until Spring ski season .... snow permitting) and more about community spread. More dayhikes, trail-runs, etc.. as I wear a Buff I just flip up ... plus mountain and gravel biking w/a Buff too plus helmet.

May decide not to attend my 50th High School Reunion October 3rd. I live in UT. New Hampshire is home. Travel restrictions, group restrictions are tight in New England. Not to mention implications for people I grew up with.
My seasonal part-time winter job might be a bad idea. I drive skiers from all over the world from the Salt Lake International Airport to Utah resorts and back. It's a shared ride in a 14 passenger Ford Transit (mobile petrie dish). Business may be slow for openers. I may choose not to drive as a Covid precaution thus losing c. $15K in pay and gratuities over a 120 day season.
A potential emotional (may be last time I see old chums) and financial bummer! (my play dough)
Lack of presidential leadership and a nationally coordinated effort may have prevented this. Perhaps not, but at least make an attempt. Not executing an attempt is unforgiveable.

May decide not to attend my 50th High School Reunion October 3rd. Is it still on? My wife's 40th and some others I know of were postponed until next year. I had been looking forward to that, because even though she's a few years younger and lived a fair distance from me, we met through classmates of hers that were at my college.

I tested negative on a recent covid antibody test. Still gotta pay attention and do the right things, though. Contrary to that, I went to my first live music show last night since February. Local western swing/Django jazz band, The Tucsonics, played at a small outside event venue.
