If/when I do my PCT attempt, I hope to have my base weight down to 10-12lbs. But I doubt I will end up with a spreadsheet fo it. I may get a spreadsheet to list all my gear with weights and such, but it would simply be for keeping track of what I actually have.

Zeke, 35 is about as low as I can get for 7 days. I did drop below 30 when we did 5 days last July. Of course, the spouse and Eldest Son both were carrying more, as is only right

Back from trip. The thread seems to have meandered a bit! I made some additions to the gear list to annotate if I used something or not and if it matters. For instance I may not have used my emergency blanket but I do care and will continue to carry it. Things like that. I'm going over all this and making my trip report.

If you can't remember it, you don't really need it.... Normally I'd agree but usually I'm running from one thing to another and the reason I forgot something is because I'm in such a rush. One of the reasons that I'm creating this spreadsheet is so it gives me a means to get things "set" in advance and have a better chance of taking what I would want to take, else I'll over pack "just in case".

Confused as usual (What else is new?) about why this thread really exists - the making of detailed, 3-color, spread sheets, especially the ones above including detailed names and prices...(other than to show off/ brag here about your specific gear and their cost on a public forum.) A detailed list is fine/ may be needed for some, but the rest...? I also see no real need to compare weights of sporks, socks, bandanas, headlamps, etc.. BTW, I refuse to weigh or write down anything anywhere about my insoles. For some just toying with the number is enough. What makes something interesting to one has no appeal to another. As for the prices and weights at some point a decision may be made to replace an item. If only a small bit can be shaved on weight, size, etc. then maybe that item will not be considered. Right along with that if my under quilt is expensive I'm probably going to force its use just because I paid so darn much for it. And also on price I like to look at the costs of items, it's interesting to me. I don't think because certain items have no appeal to you means it is for bragging purposes.

Alright I just waded through the thread. I'm back from my trip and have updates to my spreadsheet on lessons learned but I'm going to drop it.
I'm an engineer at heart and used to be by trade. I like analyzing especially when it helps me improve at something, such as this gear list would help me. I pack too much and this has ALREADY helped me based on my recent trip.
However if I can't just bring up a spreadsheet without the thread going like it did I'll just skip it. I'm new here and don't want to ruffle the feathers of already established ways and means.
For those that played along I thank you for your input, it was appreciated and was of tremendous value to me, a long time hiker, a long time ago, and looking to improve.
Feel free to delete or lock the thread, moderator.

I don't think any feathers ended up seriously out of place. As you can see, we don't all have the same approach, but apart from an occasional flareup, the participants on this thread are pretty congenial, and we generally know each other pretty well.

No need to be concerned about it. Even with the best intentions and most important topics, threads occasionally take a tangent. But it's been a successful thread with a variety of viewpoints. I think it's just the nature of open forums for people to sometimes disagree and feel strongly about their viewpoints. Some of the best lessons in life involve conflict. I'd suggest you just take it all in stride and keep participating. Thanks for the topic.

That was a joke. Don't let the negativity of others here prevent or inhibit you from doing something that works for you. If a gear list works, use it.

Nah, it's the Internet. Trying to prevent people from arguing is about as effective as trying to keep the rain out of a storm drain with a napkin. Don't sweat it, I think it's a good topic, take it as a compliment that it was interesting enough to get folks discussing it enough to disagree with each other. Welcome back from your trip! I hope it went well. - Mike

OK thanks for the dose of "No, it's ok". I'll continue forward but as I mentioned I'm fairly new and don't want to throw sand in anybody's grease.
I did find great value, for me, in formalizing something I've been halfway doing for a while. I'll post some thoughts in a minute.

Sand in people's grease is why Al Gore gave us the Internet.

Sand in people's grease is why Al Gore gave us the Internet. Then I'll just consider it "normal".

Since I was on a solo trip I had extra mental space to think about things as I was putting them back into my pack each day. Did I use that? If I did was it because it was there or just because it was a comfort item? What are the chances I'd use something? For instance some extra cordage is good but how much? I made a little system to remember what I did for each trip and if I have a thought about it. It's a quick system which I'll modify a bit but the point is there.

Any activity on this forum is good activity. This is great, not bad. In winter, the best thread discourse always comes about. You should have seen the butter vs. margarine thread or the ALPS gear meltdown.
