Nothing wrong with this thread Trav, and never said I didn't like anything about spreadsheets - just don't use them. Why the attack? As to "not spending "enough time here anyhow" - What difference does that make? Are you now the self-proclaimed keeper of the forum rulebook?

I am more than a little amused that this has turned into a controversial topic, lol.

I am more than a little amused that this has turned into a controversial topic, lol. You're not THAT new to the internet.... I'm just thanking the various gods the OP didn't mention coffee grounds or returning gear to REI. or, dare I? S*LT" ETA: Okay, on reflection "amused" isn't equivalent to "surprised" so I made a mistake there.

Rumi asks, "Why are you being so condescending towards others concerning the use of a spreadsheet?" Sorry to all if appear condescending - not my intention. I can understand the need for others using a spreadsheet - HYOH and all - just to make sure you are not forgetting anything. Just unclear why some posted the prices paid for gear here too? Yes am proud of my gear selections, cost me a chit-load for mine, but would never list what it all cost me on a "Do you use a gear spreadsheet" question. If the wife knew... Again sorry if offended. I apologize for misreading your intent. I know you are a mellow guy, so I should have given you the benefit.
Take care Rumi

But, if you want to post about how much you have paid/what great gear you use, name brands, etc...why not just start a gear post and say so below - in GEAR!. We could use a few more real gear topics there anyway. Would gladly put my own Sierra kit list up there, prices paid...(pretty proud of my kit too but - to me that could be perceived as bragging). I interpreted that quite differently, I guess. I didn't see him bragging about that at all. He didn't "add" prices to the list just to post it on the internet and show everyone. He simply put a screen-shot of his gear list as it is (as everyone was doing), and he happens to keep track of prices he paid in his own list. I doubt he even gave it another thought until it suddenly became an issue, supposedly about him "bragging" and all that. My point is, there very well may have been an extremely different thought process going on there than you so quickly assumed from him.

Am I the only one that thinks we need a spreadsheet to track this thread? Or better yet a normalized matrix?

I once hear someone say that confession is good for the soul but hard on the reputation. So with that in mind along with my lack of knowledge of Excel mixed with a bit laziness I'm wondering how we could twist the arms of some of you to put your spreadsheet up on dropbox (or something similar) so others might benefit from your hard work. Just a thought.

This has been the most entertaining thread -- I'm sitting here laughing out loud ...
And just a thought: doesn't "HYOH" also mean "do it your own way"?

Most of what I need utensils for is more of the soup/stew variety. I don't think chopsticks would be much help. How to eat soup with chopsticks: 1)Bring bowl up to your mouth. 2)Sip. 3)Use chopsticks for the chunky stuff. Not so fast, my friend. I also don't carry a bowl--I generally eat out of a bag.

I have a list - some place on my puter's extra hard drives. It was done before spread sheets - actually before computers. I used it for a checklist to make sure all was accounted for. I had previously left a trail of missing boots, stoves, clothing behind.
BlueBear mentioned a controversy. Talk about controversy, I'm surprised nobody snuck in a mention they were packing (caliber, stopping power, etc etc).
I'm also surprised nobody posted a link to a spread sheet Like Coolkat, I could down load and tidy things up here. Not that I know how to modify an Excell spread sheet. I think every new or just starting back packer would like a hint on what not to take and bookmarks to them on the 'net. At one time it seemed a routine thing to post on individual's websites.
I had what I thought was a set of perfect lists with variations for season, type of terrain and weather. At least it had on it what I had and not so much what I wanted. The key column was the weight in kilo grams - so much easier to add up than pounds and ounces and decimals of ounces.
I managed to lug along a rain cover for the tent for many years and perhaps used it. I don't remember. The family's traditional start of the season was Father's Day at Cottonwood Lakes (Southern Sierra, out of Lone Pine on US-395). Snow on the ground was expected at above the 11,000' level by mid June. As I unloaded the packs and reshuffled stuff around between the kids (now a year older - yay Sherpas), I noticed that the rain fly was missing. I decided to chance it since the forecast indicated the rain wouldn't start until we were on the way down two days hence.
The next day after the kids and I were kicked off the summit of Mt Langley by 'frost snow' and looming clouds. We tried unsuccessfully to cover the tent with parkas, footprint and ponchos we made a hurried exit leaving at 6pm during a heavy cold snow event. By the time we packed up, all of the equipment was soaked and the trail was quickly disappearing. We got back to the car 3 hours later in a rain. We stuffed all in the car and made a mad dash for home dodging fresh rocks on the road downhill to Lone Pine. Arriving home about 5 hours later we left everything in the car and headed to bed.
Awaking to the morning news events, there was a description of a 'rogue', surprise heavy snow dump of around 4' in the south Sierra and luckless backpackers were being extracted by helicopter. If I had had the rain fly, I'm sure I would have decided to tough it out and we would have been one of the statistics. At least the kids would have enjoyed the ride. It was an example of the maturity of the art of weather forecasting a half century ago.
So much for a comprehensive list. I at least learned a lesson and have had a single wall tent for decades. I still ended up on hikes with one of my boots and one of wife's. In the dark they look very much alike.

A librarian, ninja or otherwise, should never use words which don't exist. I'm putting both you and your faux mot in my Grammar Geek spreadsheet. In red. I have as much right as anyone to invent words. And I'll stand by that right until you pry my word processor from my cold, dead hands. I'll give you credit for dreaming up a big one. Congrats on upgrading from the quill and inkwell. There. I've posted off-topic replies to a perfectly innocent thead by a well-intentioned new member which went off the rails into spreadsheets, colors, fonts, and costs we can't read. All from seat 29A on Sky Airline flight 30 on the pad at the airport in Puerto Montt, Chile. Ain't the Internet grand?
