Great start to a great trip. The big snow event a few weeks back should give you more water than in most years.

Very nice, Westy. Yer off to a great start. Did you ever read up on the history of the community of Sunnyside on the western flanks of the Huachucas?

It is a bit of a shame that the AZT is not routed more easterly after leaving the Catalina mountains. The Gailuro mountains are very scenic, with Aravaipa Canyon as its jewel.

Did you ever read up on the history of the community of Sunnyside on the western flanks of the Huachucas? That would be fascinating. Enjoyed that side of the mountain. Would dislike being a SOBO there. Aravaipa Canyon as its jewel. No problem, Just means another hike. The GET (Grand Enchantment Trail) goes directly thru Aravaipa. Downside is there is an alternative route as you must hike the canyon in a day or obtain an overnight permit. Considered the GET but selected the AZT because I'm lazy and the AZT has Guthook.

Not sure why you feel the need to split hairs. Only because snowfalls like the one that just went through where it even snowed in Tucson are rare. The local weather guys are still talking about it.

That would be fascinating. Enjoyed that side of the mountain. Here is an excerpt from an article about Sunnyside. Twenty miles northeast of Lochiel is the old ghost town of Sunnyside. Interestingly, Sunnyside is far removed from the “typical” Arizona ghost town, as far as its make-up, beginnings, and lifestyle, not to mention its remote location. Unlike other mining camps, it was not filled with saloons, brothels, and lawless elements, but rather, it was a religious community. Were it to exist today, modern writers would probably call it a commune, or worse, a “cult.”link

How much snow hit the southern ranges during that event? I had never been to the Superstition Wilderness before, but my friend, a former local, assured me that snow atop Superstition Mountain was very rare. We ran into a group that had come over the pass (might have been Fremont) reported postholing up to the knee in spots. I heard that Mt. Lemmon got 3 feet, and the stream flows in Aravaipa suggested a pretty significant flood (over 1,800 cfs at peak after storm) from runoff of Mt. Graham and the Gailuros.

Westy, I like the warmth of the photos; it's a welcome site this time of the year. The cloud formation in the third photo is especially interesting, soft, yet as if there's a definite path in a strong wind.

Not sure about the Supers, but the high peaks in southern Arizona, Miller Peak (Huachucas), Mount Graham (Pinaleños Mountains), Mt. Lemmon (Santa Catalinas), Chiricahua Peak (Chiricahua Mountains) and Mount Wrightson (Santa Ritas) all got 3 to 4 feet of new snow. All those peaks are over 9000 feet. The Superstition Mountains' high point is only 6266 feet. So snow there would be rare.

Wow. That was a big storm if it dumped 3 ft from the Chiricuahuas all the way up to Flagstaff. There was LOTS of water running in the Superstitions, even up higher up in the drainages, so it must have been a rare sight for the locals.
