M: P90X workout. Knees sore from Sundays run, and tweaked my left knee during the workout. Tu: Slow 2 mile neighborhood run with my son and daughter. W: Bike commute 19 miles Th: Nada F: 3 mile trail run with my daughter. Sa: Push-mow lawn. 3 mile hike with my son. Su: 12.5-mile hilly wet foggy trail run. In the middle is a behemoth of a hill that climbs 700' in 0.7 mile (20% gradient on average, with a max around 50%). I only walked one short section, and that was due more to tight/screaming calves than cardio.
Weight increased 1.5 lbs... I think partially due to swelling after last Sunday's run and partially due to high sodium intake.
Knees remained sore until Saturday. The activity during the week helped. They were most sore/stiff after sitting for extended periods.

I have run across the most wonderful after exercise get rid of muscle soreness remedy. Non-hemp CBD, contains 0% THC. After rubbing the oil on, which, quickly, gets absorbed through the skin, and about a 5 minute wait, my feet feel like they've not been sent to the torture chamber. My wife has had the same experience. Non-hemp CBD oil, also, works on other sore body parts. After an application of a 1/2 droppers full of oil per foot, I am pain or soreness free and I, typically, do not need/want to apply anymore CBD oil until, after the next foot torture session.

Ohm, We've also started using CBD oil for sore muscles. Ed has been using it for a rotator cuff injury, the jury is still out on whether that is really helping it or not. But I've loved the effects of CBD for sore/uncomfortable muscles. I use
Busy week, last week prepping for the triathlon this coming Saturday. It is officially taper week.
M: Rest Tu: Open Water Swim - egads, first swim in the new wetsuit. Sweating whether or not I'll be able to make the half mile swim at this point. Just swam the shore line this morning as I wasn't ready for the 700 meter course that was set up. W: Bicycled 12 miles. I have a long way to go to get my speed up. Hopefully adrenaline kicks in for race day. Th: Open Water Swim - Still timid about doing the 700 meter course, so swam a half mile along the shore line. Need to work on not lifting my head to breath, as that seems to be where I'm expending most energy. F: left for Frisco for a bit of camping, walked the dogs, didn't measure distance this day. Sa: Walked from campground into Frisco for bbq challenge. 2 miles there and 2 mile back. Also walked the dogs about 2 miles around camp. Su: We got home early, so I got my final brick in. Bicycled 9 miles and ran 1 mile.
Today I'll try to get to yoga, but this week is going to be very low key. Tomorrow I'll do an open water swim clinic with Boulder Aquatic Masters and hopefully that will help get me past this whole shoreline business.

Ohm, We've also started using CBD oil for sore muscles. Ed has been using it for a rotator cuff injury, the jury is still out on whether that is really helping it or not. But I've loved the effects of CBD for sore/uncomfortable muscles. I got an ointment of CBD/THC, my experience has been that using the hemp based product is a step up from using the non-hemp CBD; FYI. We are testing what the CBD products are good for, so, for the near 11 mile hike back to the car, and drive home, we pre-treated ourselves to a 10mg dose of non-hemp CBD. The experience, for me, was that non-hemp CBD, used as a pretreatment, why wait till I get sore when I know I am going to get sore, was way better then aspirin, Naproxen, and Acetaminophen when used as a pretreatment.

Last week was a busy, busy week. I was tapering, so I took it easy in the work out arena. M: Rest Tu: Open Water Swim Clinic - This relaxed me a bit in that I could finally get a feel for how the wet suit performed. As we made our way around the course with the coach giving us drills, we'd stop and talk. As we were stopped and listening to the coaches, I would just bob up and down. So different from last year before I had a wetsuit. I made it around the course without any issues! W: Rest Th: Walked the dogs 2.75 miles through our hilly neighborhood. That night we went and saw John Fogerty at Red Rocks which meant many, many stairs and a hike from our vehicle to the entrance. I should have turned my Garmin on as I left the vehicle. Red Rocks is really something special! F: Went to downtown Denver for packet pickup, finished getting the camper packed and trying to run through lists in my head (never again, I'm going to start keeping paper lists). Left for the campground around 1pm and got to Cherry Creek SP at around 2:30pm. Ate some lunch and then Ed had a couple of friends dropping by to see the new rig. As they arrived, I decided to take the dogs for a walk to see how far away transition was. I took the long was along the shore to get to transition and realized there was a shorter way. Still worked out to be about a mile. I walked the dogs a total of 2.5 miles the day before my tri when I should have been resting my already sore muscles from the day before. Oops. That evening, I gathered everything together to take over to the race transition. It was rainy and cold. Ed was wanting to leave the camper at the campground instead of driving over to the race. That night, as I lay in bed trying to get to sleep, I again was running through my gear list. It was at that time that I realized what I had forgotten! I completely forgot my rain goggles. I put out a call for help to fellow athletes who would also be racing the next morning and within minutes, someone posted up that she had put an extra pair of goggles in her bag for me! Thank goodness! Okay, time to try and get a little sleep. Ha! I probably woke up 5 times that night worrying about the race the next morning. Sa: My alarm went off at 5am, Saturday. I woke up to 45* air temps and rain. At which point my husband says "maybe we'll just move the camper over to the race first thing". Thank goodness! Otherwise I would have been standing outside in that relentless rain and cold. The rain wouldn't let up until around 7:30am. At around 6:20am a knock came on our door. Jessica, my Goggle Savior was there with her spares! I thanked her immensely and would try to find her after the race to return them. Later I would find out that she finished her race and had to leave right away as she got news her grandmother had passed away. :( At 6:30am I walked over and got my transition area set up and retreated back to the camper to dry off and warm up. 7am rolled around, and I decided to take a stroll over to the announcement tent where they said the air temp was 48* and the water temp was about 68*. After hearing that, I couldn't wait to get into the warm water. I retreated back to the camper to get my wetsuit ready. I started spraying my legs with TriSlide only to find out our CO2 detector works! lol I put my wetsuit on, looked at the clock and it said 7:30am. It had turned to drizzle outside, so I decided to head down to the swim start. 7:45am they started making announcements about the race course and how the race would run. Only a few more minutes and I'd be in the water. The first wave (Elites) went out at 7:58am, then they released the other waves every 2 minutes after. I was in the 4th wave and was very happy to get into the water and get my core warmed up. The swim went really well. I swam freestyle most of the way out to the first bouy before I needed to roll over on my back for a quick breather. Rolled back over and freestyled to the first bouy, rounded the bouy, and kept going. I would rest every few minutes. I did much better this race than my last. I was able to finish the swim in 18 minutes (my first race took 30 minutes for the swim). I freestyled to the swim exit and when I felt my fingertips hit the bottom, I stood up, unzipped the wet suit and tried to run out of the water. Egads I was exhausted. Got to the wet suit strippers, plopped on my butt and let them pull it off me. Walked up to transition, handed the wetsuit to Ed and proceeded to try and put my dry tri top on and a long sleeved tech shirt for the bike. I was in T1 for 8 minutes, but it felt like forever. My feet were freezing just from the walk from the Res to T1 and I was shivering. Just swimming in my sport bra made all the difference though, as I had dry clothes to put on over. After I finished putting my socks, shoes, bike gloves and helmet on, I grabbed my bike and make for the bike out. Mounted my bike and started peddling. 10 miles was nothing, but I didn't anticipate a couple of the hills they had and I was already tired. I took them one hill at a time. My bike time wasn't all that great as it had started raining again and the temp fell again. My legs turned purple and my toes went numb. I was thankful to be done with the biking part. I dismounted before T2 and dropped my bike off and almost ran out with my helmet and gloves still on. lol Ed stopped me before I got that far. I threw my running cap on and ran out. About halfway through the run, the sun had finally came out, with a little rain still falling. I was so thankful for that sun. I run was also slow, but by then, the exhaustion had set in. I just wanted to get through the run. And I did. It was a tough race, but I finished. And I know what I need to work on. It was a super fun race! Su: Walked the dogs 2.5 miles at Westminster Hills Dog Park.

Week of June 23.
On Sat., my wife will be running her 2nd Spartan race. She has put in training, time, effort, and money to improve her performance over her first year.
Sometime around Memo Day I weighed myself to discover I had magically put on 10 pounds. I had a Dr. appointment that only confirmed my weight gain. In the end I accepted blame at not having self discipline. Today, I weighed 11 pounds less then my Memo Day weight. I did not try to lose weight, I regained myself discipline.
Mon: Tablerock hike.
Tue: Cablecross
Thu: Landmine. I did Bingo. I have 7 Landmine lifts. The 1st round I did 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. The 2nd round I did 2 3 4 5 6 7. The 3rd round I did 3 4 5 6 7 and so on. Ima sore

M: Bike commute 13 miles. Walk dog 1.5 miles. Tu: Bike commute 21 miles. W: Bike commute 6 miles. Insanity workout. Th: Walk at work all day. 17,000 steps, 3,400 calories burned. F: Walk at work all day. 13,000 steps, 3,000 calories burned. Wife's end-of-the-year party (she's a teacher). I drank beer and ate brats. Sa: Push-mow lawn. My wife brought boneless wings home for me. They were tasty, but on the mild side. So I dunked one in the provided sauce. My wife neglected to tell me it was Ghost Sauce. I was a mess the remainder of the day. Su: 13.5-mile hilly trail run. Mud, mud, and more mud. Between the constant slipping and shoe-sucking, I was exhausted at the end.
Weight increased another 1.5 lbs... then on Sunday, I lost 4 pounds. Kinda confirms the weight gain is at least partially due to high sodium intake.

msdoolittle, congrats on the tri! I decided it’s time to start hanging around this thread again, as the effort has begun—the effort to recover from our lengthy road trip! I have now been in the pool twice, and it feels pretty good (after a 6-month gap!), but it’s really easy to overdo it, and I discovered on Saturday (well, actually, I really discovered it on Sunday. Pass me some of that CBD oil!). I have been trying to bike at least 10 miles each day, which hasn’t always worked—I’m not used to having to plan around the heat. This place is flat, so 10 isn’t much, but it will help me toughen my butt. Started a pump class (sort of like Body Pump, but less so, I think. Also seemed to call for more coordination, which is... challenging). Will start Pilates this week as well, I think. Finally, we are starting to walk at least every other day, shooting for 3 miles. This has to be done in the late evening, so for now that will be as much as we get, I suspect. When we get closer to backpacking time, I’ll just have to haul my pack to the gym and do it indoors, but I can’t imagine “hiking” even 3 miles on a treadmill—boooooorrrrrrring.

I recuperated well from last Sunday's run.
M: Walk at work all day. 17,000 steps, 3,500 calories burned. Tu: 3-mile trail run with my daughter. Struggled MUCH more than I should have. W: Bike commute 24 miles. Felt good. Th: Bike commute 15 miles. Walk dog hilly 3 miles at State Park. F: Nada. Fell asleep at 7:00. Sa: I intended to go for a morning trail run of 9-14 miles but I woke up feeling 'blah'. The weather wasn't helping... warm with humidity like soup. The mist stopped, the sun came out, and I got the energy to push mow a section of the lawn. Around lunchtime, a nice breeze developed and I decided I'd go for the run afterall. Unfortunately(?), the trail was in dense woods and there was no breeze whatsoever in them. And the canopy trapped the humidity from the morning's rain. The first 3 miles were entirely uphill and I was spent at the 'peak'. I was definitely not in top form... plodding more than running. I continued another 3/4 mile to a landmark, then returned the way I came. In all, 7.5 miles with 1,200' of climbing. Got home and weed-whacked along the 150' guardrail. I was a puddle at the end. After a lazy morning, I still managed to burn 4,000 calories. Su: We were at my brother's late-morning to mid-afternoon. I had an inkling of riding my bike there (25 miles), but I didn't have the desire upon waking. Felt run down and wanted to take a nap the entire day. Arriving back home, I did a 3-mile trail run with my daughter. I felt like crap.
Weight spiked up. Performance down. Energy level/desire down. I think I'm overtraining (specifically the long weekend trail runs).

I had a feeling I was overtraining, so I kept my activity on the light side until Sunday's trail run. Ungodly humid for most of the week. How humid was it? Gorilla tape wouldn't stick to a plastic bag. The humidity broke Saturday night, which made for pleasant conditions for Sunday's run.
M: Sat in a certification refresher class all day. 1.5 miles of interval training with my daughter. My tracker shows an additional 50 minutes of light activity, but I forget what. Tu: P90X stretching "workout". My tracker shows an additional 40 minutes of light activity, but I forget what. W: Bike commute 22 semi-hilly miles. Felt good. Th: Parade. Split a cord of wood in heat index approaching 100F (I ain't too bright). Fireworks. F: Light yard work and house work. Burned 3,300 calories and sweated about 3 gallons. Sa: Light yard work and house work. Burned 3,200 calories. Su: Trail run 14 miles with 2,200' elevation gain. Felt good.
Weight increased again, but I'm looking the same as when I weighed a few pounds less.
I had about 5 outdoor projects that were 90% complete. I finished them this week, which was a good feeling.
