Start with a new roll and weigh it. Use for a few days and weigh again to get a "per day" weight average. If you estimate need by weight, it will normalize single vs double vs triple-ply and you won't fixate on the number of sheets. To be clear, my method of taking the amount that I have learned from experience will be enough and them some to spare is working just fine for me. I'm just a little incredulous at some of the claims that have been made in this thread is all. That's the method I use for everything, BTW. I have literally never weighed my pack, nor any of the items I load into it, to the best of my recollection. I definitely pay attention to the advertised weights of gear that I purchase, of course, and I travel pretty light overall. But whatever any individual piece of gear weighs, I'm either willing to carry those ounces or not.

I have a spread sheet with all of my weights. Nothing goes into the pack that isn't weighed and tallied first.

since this thread started, I've been paying a little more attention to such things (at home--I haven't been BPing since then), and you people who say "a few sheets" must come from a different planet than I do. I'm not sure how to engage in this discussion in a discreet manner...but a couple of things. First, your body's position when squatting over a hole in the ground vs sitting on a toilet is different, and let's just say that the squatting position renders a "cleaner" experience. Second, at least for me, a multi-day trip on the trail will knock my digestive system off track, and for me the result is, um, well again I'll just say a "cleaner" experience. Also a, um, less frequent experience, so the amount of tp I take "per day" isn't necessarily a limit on how much I need or have available for any given day. My "squares" quotient is higher at home.

Whoever suggested a spot with a good view has a point, but I know a kid who, on our first long family backpack trip presented quite a view to some climbers just as they reached the top of a wall in Yosemite. It was moonrise, but not over Half Dome or El Capitan. You can't learn these things playing video games.

Whoever suggested a spot with a good view has a point... One of my best photos of Glacier Peak was taken in the early morning from atop the privy at the Image Lake camp. It was 10 years ago--I don't recall why I had my camera with me at that particular moment. It's not an activity I'm in the habit of photo documenting. ![](https://preview.ibb.co/eEEvFU/100_0814.jpg)

cweston, we will assume you were merely being a smart photographer, who is always prepared for a good shot. As for the need for a lot of sheets, that’s part of the point of the Kleenex—it’s much thicker, softer, and tougher than TP, especially than cheap or septic-tank-friendly TP.

I thought burning TP caused forest fires, as it floats away?!

Take a Grand Canyon raft trip, they always but the potty riverside so you can pee in the river, and you can say high to those floating by.

I thought burning TP caused forest fires, as it floats away?! Burning TP is a fire hazard from floating embers and from catching the duff on fire. Not that I was ever able to get it to burn at all, since part of what it’s used for gets it wet ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/6271026/images/BM8Lg9hpQ8qTtb8QU740.gif)
