Thanks Mike, I'll send you a PM as we get closer. If you have a partially used canister of fuel I might pick it up from you, or buy one and leave it with you - or anyone else who's local or isn't concerned with TSA. Either way works. I have canisters of fuel I can bring. I'll second the firewood suggestion. When are you arriving?

Pickle Gulch, with travel accommodations by BMW Motoradd, is on my dream hike list.
PAC-12 football contractual obligations for game day(s)is obstacle number one, followed by the annual US International and Challenge Skate Figure Skating event held that week at our home ice rink makes for another blown September.
This event is quickly moving from dream hike to bucket list status.
All, please have fun!

Deborah, I'm landing in Denver at about 1:15pm on Wednesday, then picking up a rental car, buying some food, and heading to GGCSP. Finding food and ice to bring shouldn't be difficult, but I'll need suggestions on where to pick up firewood.
Does anyone know how well various fuels for multifuel stoves work at altitude? Kerosene, jet fuel, etc. 9k-15k feet. I've got some notes somewhere but can't find them.
Never mind, found it.

I usually get some whenever I'm in San Francisco. Interesting. Any idea why it's available/popular there? It's kind of a long way from Louisiana.

Deborah can tell you better, but there is a nice firewood place that will sell you a trunk load of firewood for cheap, or it was when I bought it 4 years ago. I think it cost me $20 to fill my civic's trunk. firewood by the cubic foot.

I'll bring some bundles of firewood. I get back from Yellowstone on Thursday and work on Friday, so not sure when I'll get there (Friday afternoon or Sat. morning?).

According to the Pickle Gulch site, "Wood may also be purchased from the hosts." But since the firewood store is sorta on the way from the airport, I'll play it safe and get some there.

Sadly, I will not be able to attend this year, not even Saturday evening I hope you all have beautiful weather. I will join you in spirit in raising a glass of good single-malt to Chuck D, Phil and Jimmy C.

Thanks Mike, I'll send you a PM as we get closer. If you have a partially used canister of fuel I might pick it up from you, or buy one and leave it with you - or anyone else who's local or isn't concerned with TSA. Either way works. My experience with the Denver area consists solely of airports, both new and old. Golden Gate Canyon SP looked good, so I just kinda pulled it out of thin air and added it to the trip. I typically pick up boudin for HOTB, but I'll bet dollars to donuts that there's none to be found in the Denver area. Besides, I think that Good Steve and I may be the only ones who eat it. So if the Pickle Gulch Powers That Be (PGPTB) have a grocery list I can pick up some stuff on the way. I am 10-15 minutes from GGSP on Twin Spruce Rd, ie. Gap Road. It goes right through the park up to Peak to Peak. If you're looking for a quick escape from the city, you can stop by our place and pick up a fuel canister. Also, if you need a shower before heading up to Pickle Gulch, just let me know.

Wow, that's awesome, MsD! I've already arranged to pick up a canister from Mike, but I'll note your kind offer for future reference.
I'm sure I'll need a shower headed from PG to the airport Sunday morning, but well, that ain't gonna happen. I'll try to rinse off somewhere - maybe the bathroom at the airport - so the folks next to me aren't too offended. It's only a 2 hour flight, but it's completely booked. :D
Any suggestions on backcountry sites at GGCSP? It looks like I'll get there after they close, but after talking with them on the phone they said I should just sign for a spot and put money in some sort of deposit box. If there's an issue I can straighten it out on my way from GGCSP to PG.
If you (or anyone else) ever head toward Maryland, let me know.

Fairly early. The flight takes off at 10:50, they'll close the doors 20 or 30 minutes before that, I have to check my backpack in, return the rental car, and according to Google it's an hour and 45 minutes from PG to the airport. And there's no telling how long the rental car return could take. I've always flown straight through Denver, but I'm guessing that I'll have to wait for a shuttle to take me from the rental car dropoff to the terminal. I'm figuring an hour just for the rental car dropoff and shuttle, but I could be wrong.
