The report I just heard says that the flight wasn't overbooked, but that United wanted to fly crew members to the destination and decided a few passengers were going to be removed.

First rule about fight club is, you don't talk about fight club ... 8^{} Airline should have offered a stronger bid. (ETA: You know: "no takers" @ $800 pricepoint - we're upping the bid to $1600! Who wants the money, folks? Going once...") Now they get the civil suit based on discovering the "random selection" method. I've been bumped only one time in my life, going through San Diego. I opted for the payment, was booked on a commuter plane to LAX, from whence I returned home. I think airports are getting to be "radicalization zones" now. The TSA folk need to chill: why couldn't they have been a mite more reasonable? OTOH, a phone call ahead to the hospital would probably have been enough to allay the problems this doctor had with "patient scheduling" though, of course, I have no way of knowing. I need to do more yoga.

I volunteered to be bumped once. From SLC to Reno. They asked for volunteers, and got no takers. They upped it again, then again. I was interested, but holding out until they went as high as I thought they would go. I finally stood up, but another passenger jumped up just ahead of me. He got the money. Rats! My greed cost me. They gave me a free meal voucher for my willingness, though. Not a total loss.

We were asked to give up our seats once. It actually worked out better for us. We got home earlier on a different flight and got a first class upgrade. I'd give up my seat, especially if they offered money. I'm not always in a hurry to get home.

So they offered cash? Don't they usually offer airline vouchers valued at a certain amount?

IMHO poor move on United's part. This should have been done prior to boarding.
