Put me in the camp that says you mentioned SAR on the same day. I often told April, and now M, that I expect to be back at such and such time, but don't call the sheriff until the next morning. I always figured it would give me time to drag my embarrassed butt back to the car, even if it was the following morning. That also lets her know I am prepared to spend the night if necessary.

Ya, I need someone on myside, here. And so does your wife. She would probably get equal support when she uses her own words. But anyway, I will give you the best answer anybody can give: Who is and is not an idiot simply depends on who is asked. IOW, opinions will vary. -Don- Reno, NV

So at first glance I would say, "no" you're not an idiot. However, HSF had a point regarding waiting until the very last minute until your (what we used to call) drop dead time. We used this during our scout patrols in the military to let them know that if we had not returned by that point in time, to either begin SAR or move on without us. It sounded like you were at the very last minute before the time where she was going to have to make a really scary (for her) phone call.
If it was me, I'd pad that time a little bit next time. For instance, if you're going to use 7:30 pm as your drop dead time, then she should probably hear from you no later than 7:00 pm or even earlier. That gives her less time to anticipate the worst case scenario and still gives you some time to enjoy yourself before having to check in.

It looks like we've pretty well established that Jer is an idiot, but not for the reasons his wife said I trust you are having lots of long conversations about that cross-country bike ride. For myself, I'm glad that more and more we do these things together. If either of us gets to do a long trail or a long ride, the other will be right there. Well, actually, I'll be panting along in the rear, but that's okay, as long as he waits from time to time

Well, I'd like to thank all of you for all your comments and advice. I really didn't want to have you all have to play "Dear Abbey" but nonetheless, some interesting comments and points of view did surface. One point raised by a number of you was the time frame I'd setup for the notification of the authorities - 7:30 p.m. that evening - being a bit too soon. Could be and usually I follow something closer to the 24 hours deadline that a number of you suggested. However, this was winter and even though I think I could have survived the night out, it seemed like not a prudent thing to plan to do. I have to admit that a couple of times when I fell and was laying there in the snow trying to get out of my bindings so I could stand up, the thought crossed my mind of how dire the situation could be if had actually been injured. I really wouldn't have wanted to have spent a winter night out in that condition. I have long considered buying a SPOT or PLB and maybe the time has come to revisit that idea if I'm going to continue this type of thing. I am, after all, not getting any younger. Also, the point that waiting until the last minute before checking in was certainly valid. As is said, timing is everything and I'll have to work that and show better judgement and perhaps turn back earlier even if I don't get as far as I'd like. Guess it's sort of like "summit fever". Finally, a number of you mentioned my wife's concerns if I take my long-planned cross-country bicycle tour this summer. Surprisingly, she's fine with that as she is with most of my backcountry escapades. Of course, there is the stipulation that I keep in touch via the internet, phone or whatever, at least every other day. I think the fact it will be summer and I won't be in the wilderness, totally isolated, lends some comfort to her. At any rate, the discussion raised some good points for all of us, I hope, and as usual, I do appreciate your involvement. You're a great bunch.
Thanks.

Well, men hike alone all the time. I want to get out more, but my husband and friends all "worry." Now I've lived alone for 8 years and grew up wandering the woods of Louisiana. I'm also a military veteran and hike with an imposing looking (actually extremely friendly) dog. I have a side arm I'm well acquainted with. I'm not scared of much (airplanes and sky diving, however... oh hell no) , and am smart on how to handle wild animal encounters as well as people. When do they stop lecturing about what THEY don't know? Any of the men here have wives that solo hike? How do you get your spouse to trust your abilities more?

When do they stop lecturing about what THEY don't know? Most people want to put THEIR fears on you. Don't let their weaknesses be yours.

Time, and lots of solo hikes. After a while, any spouse will become less worried by solo hikes. Until we reach that tottering age when they begin to fret over walks to the mailbox.
