Back in June, as I started to nail together a basic forum as a sample for HQ to approve, I put in a header that mimicked the old forum header. It was a quick way to make a visual link since everything was now independent from the BP servers. Now it’s months later, the forum runs on, and it’s time to go another step in the evolution. It would be nice to open the doors to more user participation. The Autumn Gallery has inspired an idea: it’s actually pretty easy to change the header art! I have made a prototype; This is from a shot by markweth. I don’t want to swap out images every two days, but it would be nice to change images maybe once a week? I may regret this! Here are the basic photo requirements: The image size has to be 1000px by 200px. No bigger, no smaller! Obviously the image needs to be a good wide-view landscape. And having the text on top on the left will cover subject matter. So that can mask something that matters. Woodsie posted an elk photo that was almost a candidate but the elk would get covered. Here’s a twist: if I had permission to FLIP a photo, that would work if it had more forest width!. And obviously, I really have no automatic right to even crop a photo, so this really puts it on you. Yes, I’d ask you to crop your own work and email it to me. By cloudwalkerI can make sure you get photo credit posted, and while I know some feel they need to add names and copyright symbols to posted images, that’s really useless, so don’t send me cropped photos with branding.

Even swapping out the header monthly would work. I like the idea, and if any of mine were under consideration, I would certainly give you permission to crop or flip. You are BP2GO, the one who saved us all!

I like the idea also — weekly or monthly. And you'd also have my blanket permission to crop and flip, if I found a photo to submit. Um, could you change the color of markweth's puffy jacket, also? Heh, heh. Nah, just kidding.

C'mon, a mountain goat looking over the valley? You just need a w-i-d-e picture. In fact I see this as a neat chance for smartphone users to do a panorama shot! I've taken a few just to see what I could get, but I'm nowhere to get a Nature photo at this time. The warden won't let me out of the Yard.

Yes, I’d ask you to crop your own work and email it to me. Maybe it's early to get down to particulars, but would we need to email the photo as an attachment or simply upload the photo to our hosting site (like PhotoBucket) and email the link to you? Or either?

Heh, heh. Nah, just kidding. Haha . . . not my puffy jacket, that's my friend John. The technical color is "40% off Orange" if I recall correctly. Funny enough, we were actually talking about how bright the jacket is but how well it sticks out in photos.

Personally, I don't give a hoot what the header looks like, as long as the software works like it should.
Of course, not caring means I don't mind if other people want to make the place look nice for visitors.
It's your baby Steve. Do what makes you happy.

I'm just taking advantage og HQ's unexpected hands-off policy, inviting forum members to have a say in what the place looks like: inmates running the asylum! So if you're happy, I'm happy.

Sounds fun! I do a lot of panoramas, though mostly the old-fashioned way (in Photoshop from multiple photos ). I'm happy to let Steve mess with them however he needs to. I'm not under any illusions that my photos are salable quality, so posting is fine

Boldly going forward, the stage is now set. I like the lake watcher photo but it was a smaller image (640! Old school!) so taking it up to 1000 was a push, but soft as it is, I still like the feel. Next week I can switch to a sharper one. I have two more ready for use.
As for "whatever I want to do" with photos" it would be nice if you would make a photo 1000px by 200px, and if the left side would suffer with text covering something, flip the photo. Then send a JPG or PNG on to me (bpbikes@gmail.com) and I can now just slip them in to the space for the header. The text floats over the background, so it is as easy as it gets.
