I've posted a bit and actually have a previous (failed) attempt or two to introduce myself. So here goes. Although I've done some dayhiking and family camping over the years, I'm pretty new to backpacking. I've joined my husband and his buddies on their last 3 trips to the Grand Canyon -- and I love it. I've hiked the Hermit Trail, Boucher Trail, and just finished a North Kaibab - Bright Angel Rim 2 Rim.
I live in North Texas, although I'm originally from the Midwest (northern WI). Very much miss the trees and the lakes and the change of seasons. Absolutely do not miss 20 below zero, endless winter, and sloppy spring. But living here makes backpacking a little bit of a challenge. I have hiked the highest point in Texas, however, (Guadalupe Peak), as well as the highest point in Big Bend. Looking forward to another trip there in November and hoping to backpack for a night or two.

Welcome, MK! As a Texan, I feel your pain--central Texas where I live is WAY better than north Texas (IMHO), but there is a real dearth of good backpacking destinations in the state. Depending on where you are in north Texas, you might not be too far from some nice destinations in Arkansas (Eagle Rock Loop, Ozark Highlands Trail, etc), and the Gila, White Mountain, and Pecos Wildernesses in New Mexico might be within fairly easy reach. Glad to have you here. Feel free to ignore any intrusive questions about bacon, brussels sprouts, and kilts.

Welcome from the Big Sky Country. You might have limited hiking experiences but those hike you mentioned are pretty imprssive. Stick around these boards. There is a wealth of knowledge from some very experienced people. I've been around for years and still learn something new all the time. It's a good place.

Welcome, MK! We visited Big Bend several years ago, and I thought it was a wonderful place  You do need to finish the introduction. This outfit likes to know your opinion on beer bacon beets brussels sprouts kilts (no, I don't know why all but one start with "b"). |

Bacon - Love it, especially on BLTs. Rarely eat it.
Beer - Bleh. I'll have the Cabernet, please. (or coffee)
Beets - Can't get past the color. Tried them on a salad not too awfully long ago. Not impressed.
Brussels sprouts - Delish. Either roasted or sauteed in olive oil and garlic.
Kilts - I've not seen these on the trail yet. But they probably should be accompanied by bagpipes ...
Adverbs - I read that thread actually ... laughed out loud merrily ... no opinion really ... Now ellipsis ...
(I don't know if any of those are adverbs, but they do end in "ly.")

Welcome mk, I too have done the Bright Angel - North Kaibab rim to rim and Guadalupe Peak hikes and would like to go to Big Bend some time.
Forgot to mention I spent a lot of time visiting Merrill, Wis. when my parents lived there. Very cold place in the winter.

Hi, mk. Welcome aboard. Hope you enjoy the place. Beets - Can't get past the color. I have sympathy for any decent beet that suffers from an infusion of red dye #40. Why can't we just let beets be beets? |

Bass to Boucher, or some other use of the Boucher trail? We took Hermit down and linked up to Boucher. One night at Yuma Point, a night at Boucher Creek, a night at Monument Creek, and the last night at Indian Garden. Out the Bright Angel. We haven't been brave enough to hike up the Hermit (or Boucher for that matter) -- it was challenging enough going down! Ending up at IG and then hiking the "superhighway" out seems to work for our group. And it's always interesting to see who's hiking the Bright Angel as you get up above the 3-mile resthouse. The last trip, we met up with a guy hiking barefoot. Tough feet, I guess. |
