Forgot to mention I spent a lot of time visiting Merrill, Wis. when my parents lived there. Very cold place in the winter. I'm actually from even further north -- definitely very cold! I'll never forget the sound of the car tires on the snow when it's 30 below zero ...

I'll never forget the sound of the car tires on the snow when it's 30 below zero ... Lovely sound. The squeak means traction.

I grew up not too far from Lake of the Woods in Ontario. I would more sooner take the very cold, snowy winters up there than the slushy, icy, wet winters down here in the Toronto area. I can now understand why folk down here prefer to avoid winter than embrace it.

I grew up not too far from Lake of the Woods in Ontario. I spent a week in the 80's camping and Muskie fishing at Lake of the Woods. Also got my one and only Canadian speeding ticket.

Glad you are with us. Southern Oklahoma have a couple of places for backpacking. The Wichita Mountains near Lawton are a nice place with buffalo and elk abundant in the wilderness. The Ouachita National Forest in southeast Oklahoma have a number of backpacking trails including the western terminus of the over 200 mile long Ouachita Trail. This is an excellent link to trails in the Ouachita's and other areas.

over 200 mile long Ouachita Trail. Thank you, Starwalker. I've been looking at the Quachita Trail -- I'm interested in trying a little long-distance hiking to see if it's for me or not. Have you hiked the whole thing? Unfortunately, the link you attached didn't work!

I've hike the Oklahoma section, a section at a time, over to US 71 in Arkansas. I wonder why it didn't work. I looked at that site as soon as I posted it, so it isn't their problem. Let me try it again. www.ouachitamaps.com/index.html

Thank you, Starwalker. The link worked the second time and it looks like there's some good info there. I appreciate the guidance!

Welcome. The only place in Texas I've visited was Guadalupe Mountains NP and it looked like a wonderful place to hike
