I thought we already had a thread about this, but I couldn't find it. So I'm starting the official lunch thread, hoping for compact, lightweight ideas for lunch. Dehydrated salads I think are about as compact as we can get, and we will need to shift some of our lunches away from the traditional crackers & pb just to reduce bulk for a longer trip. This is hard, because we've been pretty happy with our lunches over the years; they just take up too much room.

My lunches during a hike are pretty much all the same. It's green apples and string cheese. I'm too lazy to change things up, I guess.

I carry a 16 ounce jar of PB in the center of my bear can, then eat it as I wish, on whatever comes to mind at the time. 7 lunches can be had relatively easily.

Is weight or bulk the bigger issue for you?

Lunch is usually some kind of bar and a packet of nut butter, washed down with electrolyte fluids. It varies, but the main criteria are being able to fit in my pocket and needing minimal preparation.

It's green apples and string cheese. That would run to some weight over a week Is weight or bulk the bigger issue for you? Both. Sarbar's cous cous salads are some of my favorite lunches. They rehydrate with cold water. You can put just about anything in them. I'm not a huge fan of cous cous, but most things you can do with that you could do with rice. I'll take a look at her salads. I have her first book, anyway. @dicentra has some good salads in her books, too. I carry a 16 ounce jar of PB in the center of my bear can, then eat it as I wish, on whatever comes to mind at the time. 7 lunches can be had relatively easily. That would probably please the spouse. I'd need my own jar--he likes to eat it straight out of the jar

I'm also trying to figure out a way to make my home-made crackers so they would pack really tightly. Maybe I could use a Pringles can as a cutter I like to make the "Lembas bread" from the Lip-Smackin' Backpacking Food books, because it's full of fat and protein.

One package (pouch) per person, repackaged into a quart freezer zip lock, the item type and instructions written on the baggie. Backpacker's Pantry Cheesecake, Two Serving Pouch (Comes in Dark Chocolate, New York, and Strawberry versions), Backpacker's Pantry Coconut Key Lime Pie, Two Serving Pouch, Backpacker's Pantry Mocha Mousse PieMake in the freezer bag, quick, no cook. We eat a beef stick with the lunch item. Our beef stick of choice is Buffalo Bob's 10 Piece Gourmet Exotic Jerky AssortmentWe like mixing in a STOK with the New York Cheese Cake on those days the trail is going to be tough after lunch. Light weight and not bulky.

Maybe I could use a Pringles can as a cutter Those cans have a 3" diameter, so most any biscuit cutter would work. If you wish to stack them in the can, I would choose a 2.5" cutter. Maybe a donut cutter. Surely a thrift store would have such an item.

Wouldn't that be awfully sweet? I do try to avoid too much sugar, even on the trail. The meat makes sense, and I often take a summer sausage and/or jerky. Jerky is really good for protein for not much weight or bulk, and since shreds of it tend to stick in my teeth, I can snack on it all afternoon :D

I almost forgot about mookies. Me too! I keep meaning to experiment with variations, since I can't say the original inspires me (that's just looking--I've never actually made it).

I used to bring cheese and summer sausage for lunch, but found that I wasn't eating enough it to be worthwhile. Perhaps it's the fat content. I like jerky in small quantities. I can't make myself eat jerky every day, though.

Perhaps it's the fat content. It's funny how people either crave or can't stand the fat when hiking. I like it, much more than at home. I think the spouse less so. I can't make myself eat jerky every day, though. I can eat it every day, but only little pieces. But that's good enough. Well, except for the bear jerky Eldest Son brought home from Russia. That stuff is pretty awful.
