Just because the old new random photo thread had so many amazing pictures. And I learned so much about other parts of the world and I won't feel like this site is complete until I have one to browse Editing to add Desertdwellers original post from the old thread i'll start with a place many people have loved, but also a site of a great tragedy and shame of our community. Yontaket, the center of the world, to the local residents until the white newcomers saw it as a gathering war party instead of the celebration that was happening, and murdered the village in the slough here. now the deer and birds and beauty has returned but the fenced in area is a mass grave that has been robbed of "artifacts" more than once

Thanks, Echo. I had forgotten about the random photo thread. One of my favorites.

If this is to be my first post in this thread - one of my favorites on the old Backpacker site - I'm going to make it count. Here are my favorite photos of the past five years, with a little blurb about each: 2010This photo was taken in maybe the most photogenic place I've ever been to. My trip to the southwest had been in the works for 3 years, but once I moved to Pittsburgh, it seemed that much further away. I saw many gorgeous places on a memorable trip, but Antelope Canyon was right up there. It was crowded as heck and tempers became frayed, but once I shut my mind to these distractions the magic seeped in. From a technical point of view I chose the above shot as my favorite of 2010, because it is a perfect example of what moves me most: graphic elements in nature. Antelope Canyon2011My 2011 favorite was relatively easy for me to select. For more than 15 years I had wanted to visit Fairy Meadows, in the Himilayas (northern Pakistan). Nestled in the lap of the world's ninth highest peak, elevation 11,000ft, the view of 26,662ft high Nanga Parbat is awe inspiring. The two nights I spent there spanned some of the best moments in my life. Nanga Parbat from Fairy Meadows2012This photo was taken in April, in Arches National Park, Utah. While waiting for the light to improve I scoped out various locations and settled on this spot. However, when the sun began to go down Delicate Arch was bathed in gorgeous light. I happened to be set up in a different spot, where everyone else was. Right at sunset the clouds began to light up, but out of frame for me. Of course these were prime from the location I'd originally decided to shoot from. Everyone must have thought me mad as I abandoned my current stand and sprinted to that other spot, out of sight... Delicate Arch2013My favorite 2013 photo was taken during summer on my dream trip to the Karakorams. The photo features a glacial stream on the Baltoro Glacier, with the magnificent Masherbrum - the 24th tallest peak on the planet - in the background. It is one of my all-time favorite photos, from a technical as well as content perspective. It has all the elements I like to put in a photo. The only downside is that there may be too many things happening, so you really have to see it on the wall to get the full effect. Glacial stream on the Baltoro2014The 2014 favorite was taken in the New River Gorge, in West Virginia. At this spot the New River, which has been designated a "National River", is quite wide and drops down in a complex of waterfalls, collectively called Sandstone Falls. Foot bridges and some rock hopping allowed me access to an island in the thick of the action. There were a number of compositions on offer. I selected this photo over some of the others I took there because of the extra drama that I felt the foreground conveyed. New River Gorge

It has not been rainy here so beachfront park is brown. But looking across the bay, I loved the light on the Nickle Creek Bluffs. People keep thinking the hills are waves when I share this, so no, not a tsunami

Travis, that is stunning! Where was this taken? What type of lens did you use?

Offhand, I don't recall exactly, Paula. I'm pretty sure it was along the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, Black Hills, South Dakota. But it might have been in Wind Cave National Park.
The photo was taken with a 15-year old Olympus digital camera with standard lens. Nothing special. Mostly it was the partial cloud cover that made the photo.
I'm just posting some of my favorites, many of which were way back in this same thread of previous versions of the forums.

Here's another I like, taken on Harney Peak in Black Elk Wilderness. The lighting wasn't the best, but I kind of like the effect:

I remember from when that antelope picture was first posted, Travis. I was so envious because I've tried for years without getting anything close. Buffalo, elk, moose and bear are all easier. This is not great or anything, but the brown pelicans are here and active this few days
