I learned that driving makes you stupid. I'm pretty sure I've learned that before, but after driving for days, I'm too stupid to remember.

I learned I got nailed by Google Earth while removing an underground tank. Proof that I was actually working!

Bass Reeves was a bad-ass. One of the most prolific lawmen of the wild west. Over 3,000 felons caught... including his own son. The Lone Ranger may have been inspired by him. But history forgot about him... likely because he was black. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_Reeves

There is an old ship that was hauled ashore several decades ago and turned into a small museum and gift shop. A nice Motel and Restaurant and an OK Trailer park are all there too, and it is named, cleverly, "Ship Ashore" I've lived near here for 26 years and only learned, yesterday that back in 1975 there was what was considered at the time, the 3rd largest mass murder in American history, done by a stranger driving through who rented room 28. tomdarby.me/2012/12/12/the-ship-ashore-mass-murders/I kind of find it Ironic that it was ever called that, when it is right beside the spot of a much larger murder at Yontocket, in 1853, of around 450 Tolowa

While no two snowflakes are the same on a molecular level, they all fall into one of 35 shapes I have a feeling all snowflakes are also the same on a molecular level, being composed of Hydrogen and Oxygen in a 2:1 atomic ratio (that is, not by weight or volume). Today I learned that I'm actually interested in giving a soda can stove a try. It's so simple and light, but I'm weary of the longer boil time compared to my canister stove's 3 minute boil time. Is the weight savings on the stove worth the longer burn time? Due to that, will it end up using more fuel? Does ten meal's worth of denatured alcohol weigh more than ten meal's worth of isopro canisters? Why does learning about different things always lead to more questions than answers?

It's not much fun to go for a walk when it's 95 degrees and the smoke is so thick you can smell and taste it.

I learned I'm getting old. I've started asking some of the younger employees at work to do jobs that involve getting down on the floor.

Does ten meal's worth of denatured alcohol weigh more than ten meal's worth of isopro canisters? Good soda can stoves can be built, but I bought a stove made from a Bud can, the ones with necks (shaped like a bottle) It is called a White Box stove, and uses 3/4 of an ounce to boil a pint of water, in fair conditions (50* water and sheltered from the wind) For 10 meals, and to allow some for spare or spillage, take 10 -12 ounces in a bottle that weighs 1 ounce.Or you could just take a plastic bottle of yellow heet, not the red one. When buying denatured alcohol, look in the paint dept of your local hardware store.
That 5 ounce steel canister and the extra weight of the stove makes it heavier than a good alcohol stove, even over a long trip. I used a Pocket Rocket and could get 28 meals out of an 8 ounce canister. That 5 ounces of wasted weight adds up over days. For a 6 day trip, my total stove and fuel weight is 27.5, while a 4 oz canister of Iso-Pro and a PR weighs in at 72 oz. Even the beginning weight is less with the alcohol stove. 1 oz bottle, 6 oz of fuel, 1 oz stove=8 ounces. vs 5 ounce steel canister + 4 oz propane + 3 oz PR stove =12 ounces.
Another advantage of alcohol is you can look and see how much is left. Canisters need to be used up and then that steel is dead weight until you get home and can recycle it. I know, this sounds like a gram weenie, and even over 6 days the added weight is about 3-4 pounds total, but spread out over 6 days. You are just carrying that same 12 ounces every day. It gets lighter, but by small margins. The 3 oz of stove and the 4-5 oz of steel never goes away.stove weight over the life of a trip

The actor who played Charlie, of Chocolate Factory fame, lives a few towns over from me. He's now a farm vet.
