I've got a Precip jacket that's about three years old. Lightly used, as in, it's been used going into the office more times than I've needed it on the trail. I've noticed that the white, waterproof layer on the inside of the hood has spots where it's separating from the outer shell material. I'm going to send it in and let Marmot look at it to see if it can be repaired. I thought about just covering the spots with something like Tenacious Tape, but figured I'd let Marmot have a shot at it first.
Have any of you experienced this? Are there better shells out there in the same price range? Just looking at my options. Thanks. |

I owned one 5 years ago. It delaminated at the wear points. I just wrote it off as something to be expected. Now, I would not expect the hood to do this. I now use either a bike wind shell, or if I want a truly waterproof jacket I use my kayaking shell. Water doesn't get through my Stohlquist.

Three years seems quite early for that. I've had most of my gear last ten years at a minimum before seeing signs of delaminating.

I haven't experienced any delamination. I've had the membrane simply wear through after many years.

The 2.5 layer laminate waterproof fabrics don't hold up like the 3 layer membrane fabrics.
All my 2.5 layer jackets have failed after 3-5 years. I still have a 3 layer GoreTex shell from TNF that is waterproof at 10 years old.
I've also had an eVent jacket fail after 4 years of regular use. It started leaking on the shoulders where the pack straps wrap.
Admittedly the delaminating in the hood is an odd spot.
Unfortunately that isn't odd for that type of material. Like tent rain flys sometimes they just fail for no good reason.

I've had a Marmot Precip that had a similar issue in the same time frame, but I did use it fairly frequently for backpacking. I sent it in to Marmot and they replaced it at no cost.
I also had a Marmot Super Mica that experienced the same delaminating issue, although I owned it longer and used it more frequently. I sent it in to Marmot last week and they will evaluate and either repair or replace it. To be honest though I feel like I used the product to the end of its reasonable lifetime . . . that jacket so a lot of use and was $200 and very lightweight, so I didn't expect it to last 10+ years even with good care.

I've experienced no problems with my PreCip jacket and I've had it 7-8 years. I suspect Marmot will do right by you.

Kind of off topic and non-responsive, but in my experience, wearing stuff to the office is generally harder on it than hiking in it. All the twisting in and out of cars, getting in and out of chairs, putting elbows on armrests, etc., can do more damage than walking freely in the wilderness. Not sure that would apply to a rain hood, but, just saying. |

It's a little known fact that marmots do, in fact, molt. However, a heavy dose of salt-stained trekking pole handles can delay this by up to 5 months. I've never heard of a use for the remaining outer layer, not even by native americans. Perhaps someone else can enlighten us on a good use for the remnant.

Just odd that patches of the inner layer have come off just above the top of the collar inside the hood. Whatever happens, I'll probably use Frogg Toggs on drizzly work days now and keep the Marmot for hiking only. |

Perhaps someone else can enlighten us on a good use for the remnant. @tdale and I were thinking along the same lines. I'm sure some here could spin/weave that marmot duff into something nice. |

My Precip jacket started delaminating quite quickly and with very little use.
My decades old gortex and my decade old eVent have not had any issues at all, still work very well.
