I've only heard of two of the brewers in the article, Sierra Nevada and New Belgium. A few are from back east. Trouble is though, is that I have great disdain for beer brewed east of the Mississippi River so I probably won't be giving them a try. Also, it appears that the beers chosen were based a lot on their names. The editors don't go much into rating the flavors. I really appreciate that brewers are packaging more of their products in cans. I'm more likely to bring some along simply because cans make it easier to pack out the empties. Here is the article.

Ooooh that Ten Fidy Imperial Stout at 10% ABV sounds perfect! Now I gotta go looking for it to stock up for my summer trips.
Thanks for the heads up!

When I first read the title I thought they were recommending taking along 10 beers next time I go on the trail. And while that sounds like a fun day trip, it's a bit more weight than I want to carry and I'm moderately concerned about effectively finding my way back home.

I've had all but 1 of those beers and very few of them are worth any free publicity. Just curious, why the disdain for eatern US beers?

I'd try all of them. I'm going to have to look for Athena. Tart beers are growing on me, and this one sounds good.
Don't knock the beers east of the Mississippi! We've got good stuff too!

I can't belive they didn't include this one from Santa Fe Brewing. Bonus, you can get a 6-pack for $7.99 at Total Beverage

Just curious, why the disdain for eastern US beers? Oh, the water of course. Not really, though. It's mostly just the "out-west with our mountain stream pure sources vs the out-east overly industrialized treated water" bias I have. (Still kidding. I have no real reason other than availability.) Sam Adams is the go to when I'm traveling out there and it's fine.

The beers I bring are based upon what I enjoy. I bring bottled beer because that is what I prefer. In my opinion, if you're going to haul that much extra weight, it better be something you seriously enjoy. I don't bring as much as I used to but definitely enjoy a cold one at the end of a hike.

it appears that the beers chosen were based a lot on their names. That seems pretty obvious to me. I rather buy my beer based on taste than a fancy name.

But fun names and cool labels are often what get us trying new beers.

Agreed. I mean, if I ran across a bottle of Dark Horse's Scary Jesus Rock Star, there's no chance it would stay on the shelf. But since it's seasonal, I'll probably be ok with their 4 Elf Winter Warmer. Or Weyerbacher's Sunday Molé Stout (Sunday Morning Stout plus some special touches minus the barrel aging.)

I guess Swamp Ape IPA doesn't quite give the impression of clean rocky streams, babbling brooks and snowcapped peaks.

I've had several good beers from back East and the Midwest, but most of my favs come from CO, WA OR & UT (Wasatch)
